I recently had a safety shutdown while riding my Segway. I was so surprised, I didn't see what icon was displayed. I took some suggestions (from this site) and did some maintenance. I cleaned, removed the shaft and checked connections, checked tire pressure, and removed batteries. All the connections were tight and clean. Recharged the batteries and took it for a ride.

I used my demo key and took it easy. Went down the block and back. By the time I arrived back at my door, the top battery indicator was blinking. I had plenty of charge left. I stepped off and switched to power assist mode. I have to power up a single step (4 inches) to my front porch. In the past, the Segway would climb it with ease. This time, it shutdown. The icon showed a wrench with lines to the left and right. The backlight was yellow, I assumed because it was in power assist mode.

I looked at the users manual for some indication. Under "System Faults", it looked just like the icon for "There is an unlocated fault in the Segway HT."

I restarted the Segway and got a normal green smiley icon. I switched to power assist and tried again. Same thing. Apparently, if too much power is applied to the motors, there is a fault. Has anyone else had this problem. "Unlocated" doesn't tell me a thing.

I once had an unlocated fault, but it wouldn't start again afterwards! One of the motors wound up having to be replaced.

Now, I don't mean to scare you, an unlocated fault is just that... it could be just about anything, and if the Segway still starts you're doing OK. All the same, I would give Segway a call and see what they say.

When you got any of these faults, had you adjusted the control bar height recently? Some have had problems with chaffing of the wires in the CS from repeated removal or adjustment.

I looked at the wires and didn't see any chaffing. I have an email into Segway and will follow-up with a call tomorrow.

It would be really cool if Segway provided a USB to Keyport connector. You could download the fault info from the HT and send it to Segway LLC for analysis. Maybe a future upgrade?

My bet is a bad battery if it's not a true platform fault.

Swap your batteries from rear to front, see if the flashing indicator bar moves as well. You could also try a conditioning exercise by leaning it against a wall in balance mode and allowing it to use a complete charge to shutdown, then watch the charge indicator LEDs to see if one indicates an uneven charge or bad battery.

If there is one design deficiency in the Segway, it is that there is almost no useful diagnostic information available to the owner. Only Segway HQ can make a useful diagnosis, and shipping a heavy HT is just not economical.

As we have more HTs (including my own) completing the warranty period, the value of owner diagnostics is sorely missed.

The "friendly and simple" UI was great when the device is reliable and under warranty. Now that I maintain it myself, I need more information. What is an "unlocated fault"? Clearly it was detected by some part of the software -- can I at least have that information?

If one doesn't have a second HT to swap parts with, there really isn't much that can be done except the usually-pointless reseating and inspection. I think this will become a bigger problem in the future.
