View Full Version : Has anyone done any serious tinkering with gears?

I love my i170! But, if I could change one thing, it would be to silence the gear boxes. I feel like filling them with 90 weight gear lube! I was wondering if anyone has really taken their machines apart and gotten into the gear cases before, what's in there, ect.
On a side note, I stopped by the Clearwater FL dealership yesterday and Jack had all the new models. There was one that had LI-ion batteries, and they are deeper by about an inch, and have four raised panels on the front. The fenders are sure different with the movable silver part, and the XT is super rugged! I still like the look of my i170 best and will add the new batteries next year after I get some miles out of my Ni-cads. JT

Do you know about the break in period on your car? It's so the rings on your pistons create the groves for oil sealing. The gears on the Segway need that same kind of break in. They will get smoother as time goes by. Check out "How it Works" at Segway.com, site map, Component Details. Doug Field goes through this at the Fest.

Jim,
PLEASE don't take your gearboxes apart! Even qualified service techs aren't authorized to do that; we would simply send them back to Segway if there were a problem with them.
I have seen the insides and they are beautifully built, much stronger than you'll ever need, but like anything mechanical, they have their own unique sounds, and do require a bit of break in. But please, please, PLEASE!!!don't crack the gearbox case. You'll do more harm than good, almost certainly, and don't be looking for warranty service if you do, because I would expect it would be refused. It's simply not user or technician serviceable.

Opening the gearboxes = bad idea.
Where'd you get nickel cadmiums? I thought those were only on the pre-release models.

Fear not, for even though I come from the Forbidden City, I surely do not agree with the rules.

If you want to open a gearbox, I will sent you one. I have about 200 gears.

Thanks everyone, that's what I wanted to hear, whether anyone has ever worked on the gears. I sure won't mess with them. Maybe they will get quieter as they break in. Mine came with the regular batteries, whatever they're called! I thought it was Ni-cad's.

Jim, they're NiMHs... you wouldn't want to have to deal with memory in NiCads.
