What do you get when you combine a big cardboard box from a home depot order, a role of duct tape, and a pair of scisors?

---> A segway travel case of course!

Seriously, I'm going to Miami this week on Jetblue with my family. The weight limit is 70 pounds per luggage, and size is 60 inches (add all dimensions together). So The segway travel case with the home depot case is too heavy, I tried getting it into a suitcase, but that meant I had to take apart everything- wheels, fenders, batteries, and it only fit into 2 suitcases to stay under the weight limit. So... I spotted a big box that was lying around the garage from a recent home depot order. It was big enough to fit the seg into, so I figured i'll give it a try.

I started by duct-taping the whole thing up, all creases, corners, and edges. When I finaly finished that, I went to try to fit the seg in it. It rolls in and out just like the original box it came in. hen I spotted a problem, the wheels and fenders were a few inches higher than the box.... So duct tape to the rescue...

I plan on removing the batteries and taking them in my carry on, and the CS in a suitcase. The total weight is about 65 lbs, w/o the batteries.

I hope it all works out..

I'd realy appreciate any suggestions.

Hi ZoliHonig

You can check this up

Your idea is not bad, but be careful of the fenders, airline is fond of staging box on top of each other, it may breaks your fenders.
Maybe you should consider the opposite way, turn the box upside down and let the wheel protuding out. Cover the wheels instead.
One more thing, you need to have some carry handle/holes on the side of the box.
You need to put some cushioning packaging material inside the box, it is too empty and too soft.
Hope you have a nice trip

Yeah i knew about that case, but it was just way oo heavy.

For the fenders, i probably will stuff some bubble paper between the wheel and the fender.

Maybe i can stuff the rest with old newspapers..

thanx

Fred you got me worried!

I called up Jetblue, and they said that is only for international flights. Domestic is no problem.

Look on the site, it is under international flights..

Don't scare me like that!

Does anyone have an idea how much lighter the HT will be with the new batteries? The lithium batteries in my camera and notebook PC are incredibly light. It could make it a lot easier to stay within the airline's weight limits.

Segway - What's holding you up?

Zoli;

I shipped my Segway back to LLC in a box similar to that and it ended up with the fenders broken. I used plenty of styrofoam and packing inside the box and it still was not good enough.

I was lucky that there was no other breakage.

I hope you fare a lot better than mine did.

Just my .02 cents.

The thing I would be most concerned about is the batteries... I'd make absolutely certain the security people aren't going to give you trouble about bringing such big batteries as carry-ons. In today's political climate, I'm sure they could argue that batteries that big could be used as some kind of weapon. Don't ask me how -- I don't know -- but it's something I could definately picture happening. Just trying to make sure you have a smooth trip! :)

Justin, yeah, i called them about that too. They said as long as they are non spillable, they are fine.

I'm going to bring the MSDS anyways, just to be safe.

Please let us know how your trip went.
My 5 cents, I would not trust the box.

I'm leaving tommorow morning, I hope everything runs smoothly.

I figure since some people have sent their segs as they are, with a box it should be just as good, if not better.

A flimsy box would scare me, since it gives the impression of strength and a baggage handler would be more apt to pile stuff on top of it. An unpackaged HT would almost have to be top dog in the pile, since round doesn't pack well. Of course, that lends itself to being dropped from the baggage wagon or heaved into place or picked up inappropriately.

I guess this is one of those questions akin to "do you get wetter running to the car in the rain or walking?". Answer: depends on the relative conditions and people involved.

Ok, im here and the seg is here, without a scratch.

They just took a minute to inspect the batteries, and the seg and the box were fine.

It got here without a scratch.

The onl y thing was the handtruck that we used to move the box around, it got lost, but we got it eventually
