Ok, I finally ran into the snide exersice comment, and had the perfect respone.

Scenario. My knees are not so good right now. They sound like popcorn going up stairs. I saw my doctor the other day, and he confirmed it, I need to see his buddy with the ice cream scoop, and get my wobblers cleaned up.

The point is, I can't run any great distance, (or any high impact activities in general), so I glide alongside my wife while she jogs and trains for the occasional 5k/10k runs.

When the comments come up, I explain that the Segway has been a great incentive to lose weight. The less I weigh, the better range I get!

I do plan on losing a few pounds, not that it'd make much of a difference, but depending on the tone of whose asking, (and depending on how much of a smartass I feel like being), I tell em I've lost anywhere from 10-100 pounds. That puts a cork in their comments real quick. Then of course there's the demos that follow, but that's another thread.... :-)

Dave the segway was my reward for losing 100 lbs, As I approach the -200 pound loss mark, any comments people make, I point them to my website.

THAT shuts them up quick!

:)

Jonathan

P:S: I have taken my segway 'running' were I walk/jog, pushing it in front of me, and when I get tired, I seg a way!

Mac, that's a real commitment, losing that weight. Congrats.

A friend of mine recently told me he lost 200 lbs of miserable fat. I asked ,how did you do it?
Got divorced.

Someone once told me how to get rid of ten pounds of ugly fat....cut of my head! ;)
I got the "well, you've found another way out of excersise" comment too. I figure it's more exerting than watching tv. Actually, if you bend your knees and lean in the corners right, I allways feel like I've had a little work-out after a glide.

oh yeah! One thing I've found is that I'm using muscles I don't normally use. And to me, that's a good thing. I ride long straights, and I ride with no hands. So, my steering is done by leaning. I still have to balance to some extent to maintin the same speed, but my side to side adjustments can be felt after riding for an hour.

Now if I lose 10lbs, that's just 10 more pounds of stuff I can get at the swap meet! :-)

Dave

BTW, congrats Mac!

I love bouncing from thread to thread. This is speaking of the seg as exercise, and another is indicating that they are sore after a long glide.

I am not usually sore after not working out.

I like to think of it more as an exercise in fun! Only had my Seg for about 6 weeks now. My muscles just need to get used to a slightly different mode of use. Would 'Seg-leg' be an appropriate term? I'm having so much fun fine tuning my gliding technique. I've got the coffee glide down pat! I think any initial sorenes I experienced was probably just too much tension fine tuning my muscles. Ahhh, finally learing to really realx. As for sore feet, don't have em, for fun though, maybe I'll just lay down some sod, and go barefoot!

Dave
I think someday soon, someone will call my name, and I'll lean forward.... and fall flat on my face, as I forget I'm not on my Seg. ;)

I love my magic carpet!

Hey Jonathan -- what was it that made you want to and/or helped you lose the weight?

Wow. Amazing. Congrats!

I can't find it now, but it looks like anything prior to September, 2004 has been archived. I just remember reading it, and was very impressed.

Wait, wait, I wonder if I googled it. Yep, that must be it.
Here's a link:

and here's a neat article about his decision to run in the 2005 NY Marathon.

Forgive me if I disagree. You can outeat a band. Grazing, sugar? Yep. You're too modest, IMHO!

The weightloss still requires work AND changing a whole mindset - which is sometimes the hardest part of all.

Jonathan deserves more than even he gives himself credit for, AFAIC <G>.
