Finally someone explains it in laymen's terms that anyone can understand. :)

In all seriousness, I hope she was misquoted. In lots of articles about the Segway, it seems that the reporter either didn't understand what was explained to them, or they just wrote what they thought must be the way it works.

Ummm, I think the writer was oversimplifying here. The "scanner" is simply the rider detect sensor feature combined with the tilt sensor. I don't think this is new technology at all. - or were you all teasing <G>?
