Well, In segway chat article:
http://www.segwaychat.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9854

I talk about the "Ultimate Backup Mirror"
But I was having problems with the camera being in the helmet
when I would look down at the screen, The camera would be pointing too high, and if I kept the camera steady I could not see the screen.

Now one project I have been working on (which I showed off a prototype at the Last Segway NYC meet) Was a camera and a monitor (the eyetop) (thanks guys) which Does what I want, but the weight of the helmet is too heavy on my head, and it slips (I also have sunk over $500 into this project and I keep adding more) (grin)

ANYWAY... I decided to revisit my original Idea, and mount a camera in my 25.0 bag, this way keeping a fixed focus on the road behind me.

I bought a 180 degree camera (really cool!) on eBay for $50.00
(here is the link)

http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQgotopageZ1QQsassZdvonebQQsorecordsperpageZ50Q QsosortpropertyZ1

I then Mounted it in my left 25.0 Bag

Photo of the Inside of the bag
(I used a rubber sheet to insulate/waterproof the bag were the camera passes thru it)

Other (outside) part of the bag

Close up of the camera (looks like HAL)

Here are some pictures of the camera unmounted

And a image of the camera (from the eBay ad, I will take pictures of mine soon)

Its a pretty cool setup
(well I think!)

Just a note:
Since the Bag is reversable (if I put the bag on the right side of the segway)
the camera faces forward, and being that it is a standard Composite video signal, I can use it to film stuff as I travel with my segway.

Wow, I can't believe how fast you put things like that together... just a few days ago, was this concept even a thought? Also, are you going to try the idea you mentioned at the meeting about the LEDs on the wheels that display messages?

hiya justin,
Yea there called "hokey spokes" (www.hokeyspokes.com)
I have three on order, if they work well, I will order some more

Thanks for the compliment, I did have the rearview camera on my mind
but played with the helmet as a in-between
(idle hands, is the devils work, or so they say)

;)

Geek,
Have you ever been picked up for pandering?
I was curious as to your choice of descriptive words.

Those Hokey Spokes are kewl, another inovation by someone with a grand idea. $100 per wheel is a bit pricey! I wonder how long it takes the average new purchaser to wipe out trying to watch them and ride/glide at the same time? ;)

Let us know how it works. Are you conserned that they are designed for wheel spokes that are for 24 inch or larger wheels?

Karl,
I looked at the picture of the hokey spoke,
it actually goes on half the wheel, and locks onto the spoke
My idea is to mount them on the wheel of the segway in a stagger
pattern, and adjust the display electronically. - It will cost me $100 and a wheel, but what the hell Its a hobby!

For the patterns, having the led stick span the hub of the wheel will be okay. It's just too bad that I think the text option will likely not work well.

Still, I am curious as to their functionality. I could mount them on my spinner hub caps but I think they are too long...

The stuff you're putting together is pretty cool. I can't wait to see the "hokey spokes" in action!

Oh, I see it... what is that? Maybe something on a phone line that's only visible in the wide-angle shot?
