View Full Version : Broken Turning Grip

For those of you that know me, you are fully aware of the strange and near-physically impossible things I try to do with my segway. For those of you that don't know me, I like to do the things that the Segway safety video says notto do. Today, however, was different.

Knowing that I'm about to lose all credibility for extreme gliding, let me preface my tale with the fact that I have *never* broken or damaged my HT while attempting something truly stupid.

Last week my control shaft would not telescope and LLC gladly replaced it. Apparently this is an unusual problem resulting from a mechanical failure. Okay.

Today, the turning grip broke off in my hand. Now, if it had broken off while I was trying a half-pipe or trying to jump the HT, I'd be heartbroken but would understand. No, it broke off when I put my hand on it. I turned it on, set up against the side of the car and locked the door, and pushed the HT back from the car. And then it broke off.

I'm confused why, I have only been using it for demo's @ FIRST last week and no one used it roughly. Is this a result of "normal" wear and tear? Or a failure in design? Or the result of normal use with the occasional freak departures from the ground?

Whatever it is, I now have a huge paperweight and I was going to glide with 10mph crew on Thursday!!! Maybe LLC isn't too busy, but I can only imagine how much they want to charge for the broken piece. . .

Hi Kelsey, very odd occurance, perhaps when your control shaft was replaced last week it was exchanged for a entire controlshaft/handlebar assembly from a used machine (one cannibilized for parts) and was previously cracked?

That's my guess as well, or possibly a manufacturing/molding flaw or void in the plastic. I believe the part that broke is most likely the "stem" that is integrally molded into the handlebar (that's how mine broke, but while I was being tossed [:I]). If this happened only one week after replacement, and under normal operating circumstances as you describe, then I would expect that you would be entitled to a free repair/replacement.

... unfortunately, I'm quite sure LLC doesn't care much about my opinion in this matter ... good luck! Let us know how it goes ...

Kelsey,

I know it is just a minor thing, but if you could arrange it, just get the part. I'll have tools with me on Thursday, and ten minutes in the parking lot at LLC will have you on your way. (I'm sure you could do it as fast, so tools are available.)

At least you won't have to wait for bench time.

Sorry for your inconvenience...
