Hi Everyone,

I'd like to thank Michael from Segway Southern cross for his tireless work in getting the Segway to Australia and for continually striving to have our legislation changed to enable legal use.

Michael notified me that the first shipment is on the way to australia carrying a lot of pre ordered segs. Among them mine! yeah!

Thank you Michael and congratulations!

regards

Phil

So what is the legal status in Australia now?

Excited to see the Segway-enthusiast family grow world-wide :)

Hi Chris,

I'm hoping Michael might want to answer that question. If he can.
Looking forward to gliding soon!

Hey Guys,

i'm sure Michael is extremely busy at the moment working to have legislation put in place, and i'm sure he will advise us soon as he is able to on the status.

Australians are notorious adopters of new technology. I'm looking forward to the slow but steady build up of the community here.
Thanks to everyone here for their helpful posts which are a godsend to the newbies about to come on board.

cheers
philby

Hi, Ive been interested in Segways for a long time now, and have been reading the posts. Is there any updates for 2006 in relation to the legalities of riding Segways on public footpaths in Australia? Particularly in Brisbane?

Hi Adam

Nice to hear from you.
There has been some progress, but the bureaucrats are being very careful, which means slow.

By all means send me an email at the links on www.segwaysoutherncross.com and we will try to understand your needs, and give you the best advice we can.

Have you taken a test glide yet ?
Contact Brian or Craig at www.segwayqueensland.com.au and they can arrange it, plus give you guidance.

Regards
Michael

Hey all.... we have had our i180 for only a week here in Homebush (Sydney Olypics 2000) and been having a great time. We frequently glide in and around the Olympic Park area, and have seen many rangers and police, but have not been hasseled by them at all. Obviously we are very cautious in public area's, around other people, which is just about everywhere in Sydney... We have even been into our local shopping centre on a few occasions with the shopping centre security just giving us the usual curious stare. I now just wish there were more Segway owners around to share the fun we are having.

All the best... Bill and Tash

MMm still the question of the device been legal is still questionable, either they are, or they are not legal.

I would be getting a diffinitive answer before forking out the money, i personally what to buy one, but i cant justify untill we are clear on the rules in australia, brisbane would be great for them.

Tashstar, maybe you can fill us in on any permits etc you had to get, one thinks that electtric bikes are allowed why not segways? Provided they meet the power restrictions.

What say you all?

Hi Celtic Cub

Always nice to welcome new members.

Sadly the law is not clear.
There are some States that permit them to be used in public under certain cicumstances. Others not.
It is a dynamic situation too.

We don't make the laws, others do.
We merely interpret them and do our best to live with them.

Naturally we co-operate with appropriate bodies and consultants to government authorities, to ensure that they have facts in order to make sensible new rules for new technologies.
However the process is neither fast nor simple.

If you are in Australia, by all means give me call or email and I shall give you the best current advice.

Cheers
Michael

The "Australian Road Rules" are the basis for legislation in each state, with minor variations not affecting the given definition of a pedestrian as far as I know.

Rule 18: Who is a Pedestrian?
A pedestrian includes:
(a) A person driving a motorised wheelchair that cannot travel at over 10 kilometres per hour (on level ground)

The dictionary section of the ARR defines a wheelchair as:
wheelchair means a chair mounted on two or more wheels...

So you can say "under rule 18(a) of the Australian Road Rules I am defined as a pedestrian since this cannot travel at over 10kmph" and start the Segway with the black key. You can even challenge them to check the speed with a radar ;)
Since the rules do not define a chair, then they cannot say that having a shaft-mounted seat doesn't count. It does.

Hi guys... and welcome to the Sydney Segway club... at least the virtual one anyway... me and my p series can often be seen around Centennial Park, Rushcutters Bay, Rose Bay etc... so if you are ever in the area, let me know!

Best wishes, and have fun

And yes, Michael from Segway Southern Cross is the best ambassador Segway LLC could hope to have.

Cheers

Glad to hear from our friends from OZ, I know it's been a long road, welcome aboard!

It's funny, I have a friend with a nice sailboat named the Southern Cross here in the USA.

OZ is great, I have many good friends there, so just Segway!
