I believe that the new Centaur is just the tip of the iceburg when it comes to the exciting new uses of technology that we will see from Segway in the future.
I had the chance to speak with Doug Field for a while at SegwayFest, and I asked lots of questions. I didn't bother him with "When will you finally...???" or "Why don't you...???" types of questions, but expressed my support of the Segway engineers taking the necessary time to do things correctly and safely.
Doug said that the engineers have been able to get back into the frog kissing mode more lately. That is obvious from the Popular Science article about the Centaur. Of course they are dilligently working on the improvements we all desire for our P's, I's and E's, but they are not spending all their time on old problems. The exhilaration of coming up with something totally new and different was there before the reveal, and it is still there now to keep the engineers excited.
Doug said that we will be amazed at the things they come out with over "the next 12 to 24 months".
A theme that I heard more than once at various SegwayFest sessions was that Segway has no desire to develop or market a lot of things that are already available elsewhere. They will let the existing big companies do that. Segway will focus on "advancing the technology", as Doug phrased it.
Part of what attracted most of us to the Segway originally was that there had never been anything like it before. I sure am glad that they are still working on creating innovations the likes of which we have never seen before.
