Hey, I am a freshman at the University of Alabama. Parking is severely limited and I live off campus. I am interested in purchasing a segway number one because it looks cool, and number two it would really help the going around campus thing. My problem is there is no one else here with a segway, and I dont think I would be able to take it in to class with me and all that. What should I do?

I'm using mine at the University of Oklahoma. It really makes it easier to go the 2 miles to campus and the 2 miles back from campus that I have to go. My suggestion is to talk to administration and see what they say about you bringing it into classes. After that ask your professors if they don't mind you bringing it into the classroom. For the classes that are crowded you might just not be able to bring it in. It is a little easier for me since I'm studying engineering and all of my professors really don't have a problem with it. The only times I have issues are classroom that are too full.

Buying one for campus would be a great decision. I use mine constantly here at the University of North Dakota, and I don't know what I'd do without it. As far as policies go, there are none here regarding the Segway specifically, but there is a policy that says electric scooters aren't allowed indoors, even if the owner is walking it. That said, I've only had an issue bringing it into one of the buildings, and for now I've been locking it up outside when I go there. (I'm working to get that cleared up with an official here).

I don't bring it into classes -- I find that to be unnecessary. I usually leave it in the hallway right outside the classroom door or in the entrance to the building. I also have an arrangement to keep it hidden under the main stairwell in another building I'm in frequently. Where I keep the Segway really varies depending on where I go. I'm able to leave it out of sight without worrying because I've found that theft it really a non-issue here. What's more, if it were to be stolen, everyone knows who I am (as the only segway owner in a small and isolated town), so anyone would notice a stranger wheeling it away. Of course, it's probably a different story where you're going, so I'd suggest looking into the policies and talking to the professors. I'm sure you could work something out... it's [u]definitely</u> worth it.

Parking is bad here, too, and I spend so much time traveling around town and around campus I really don't know what I'd do without my Segway. Go for it!

P.S. Be prepared to answer a few hundred questions from bystanders in the first days of ownership ;)

Now - about those promised extended range batteries....

hehe, I have a plan... it involves snow tires and a radiation-suite like wardrobe. Also, from what I'm told, the sidewalks on campus are very well shoveled. I'm more worried about my exposed skin (face) than the segway, and I won't have to worry about that with a full face shield (like car-painters use). ;)

Hi, "TheEmperor,"

The Segway HT on a college campus is an ideal environment (I think). I ride mine to/from campus (and around) each day at Michigan State University (MSU). I believe parking in the classrooms here would not likely be a problem. Our classrooms have plenty of empty space at the doors and you'd likely be the only person on campus riding one so I'd predict your professors would be amused and happy to have you park it wherever in their classrooms.

I'm a prof and I just recommend to ask you instructors if they mind if you park it against a wall during class. You should ask you campus parking/police people if they have any policy concerning the segway or scooters. MSU does not seem to have any policies concerning this category of vehicles yet, to be safe I don't ride inside buildings but just pull it behind me.

Hey Emperor,

I'm a freshman at Georgia Tech (who has a lot of friends at the University of Alabama, btw) in midtown Atlanta and man, I can tell you, every day that I'm here I wish I had a segway. If you can get one, then great. Go for it. As long as you have secure places to keep it and a place to recharge it, then you should be fine. I hope you get one, because then you can show those UA kids what engineering is really all about.
I hope I can get one before my freshman year is up, and I hope you get yours soon too.
