View Full Version : bumpy ride - gyro damage?

In the past few days, my segway rides much less smooth than before.

I have had the segway since july 03 and put about 1000 miles
on it. A week ago, I hit a curve and took a bad spill. No
damage to me except for a scraped elbow.

Could something (one of the gyros) inside have been damaged?
How could I tell? If so, could I get it repaired at a Sharper
Image or Brookstone nearby or would I have to send it back to NH?

Whenever my Seg begins to feel different I check the tire pressure. This may help, it may not help.

Sharper Image or Brookstone cannot do any repairs, you would have to contact SEGWAY for repairs.

Can you explain in detail how the ride is more bumpy? Does the Segway's movement seem more erratic? Gyro damage isn't impossible, so you should definately give Segway a call.

there are 5 gyros and it is monitoring 3 at a time (from what I understand), if it doesn't like what 1 of them is saying it goes to a safety shutdown. (I could be wrong about this) I would think that if it damaged a gyro you would not be able to ride it because it would continuously go into a safety shutdown.

I don't have any inside info, but good old fashioned electrical engineering would suggest a cold boot, could not hurt.
Try and disconnect both batteries.

Wait more than 1 minute and then replace them.

Worth a try ??

I agree that you should check your tire pressure as you can easily lose pounds a week. You may actually have a loose wheel, so I recommend checking and tightening your lugs.

The gyros are electronic, and all are used (different directions). I doubt that they are giving you a problem, and agree with others that the HT would tend to shut down if the gyros had a problem.

I believe all repairs are done back in NH. The mall stores have about zero chance of doing anything but replacing.

About the Segway shutting down if detecting a faulty gyro, I remember reading about a member here who was having similar trouble (unstable seg behavior), and this person sent the machine to NH. As I remember, it turned out that a couple of the gyros weren't working right and needed to be replaced (even though the machine wasn't actually shutting down). Hopefully this person (I can't remember who) reads this and will lend some advice.

Thanks to all and esp to dqbint for your suggestions.
I had a fair amount of lateral instability esp on
uneven surfaces. A cold start seemed to make things better.
