Hi Segway users,

My name is Michael Levenson, and I'm a reporter with the Boston Globe. I'm looking for reaction from Segway fans to new restrictions paassed yesterday that ban Segways from sidewalks and bike paths in Massachusetts.

If you're a Segway rider and have a moment to call me and share your thoughts with me, I'd be greatly appreciative.

Thanks,

Michael - tel: 617. 818. 1376. email: levenson@gmail.com

Apparently, it turns out, there were no restrictions passed yesterday that concern the Segway.

I just confirmed, the restrictions DO include the HT. I hope LLC and Seg America have the lobbying strength to reverse this 'slow moving' trend. If not, the HT will quickly becom a relic of our own demise.

Thank god there were not many lawyers when the horseless carrige was first introduced.

Take a look at house no. 1544 which is the bill in question: http://www.mass.gov/legis/bills/house/ht01544.htm.

It states “Motorized scooter” any two wheeled device that has handlebars, designed to be stood or sat upon by the operator, powered by an electric or “gas powered” motor that is capable of propelling the device with or without human propulsion..

It would seem that this bill applies to segways. This definitely needs to be amended.

The Segway HT was not included in the bill that passed last night. In fact, the Segway HT was exempted from it.

Or the Engadget post from Eric Fleming, Communications Coordinator, Segway LLC:

[yes, I know this is a duplicate post -- I just wanted to make sure it appeared in this duplicate topic, so to say :)]

ok, if LLC's correct, then the copy of the bill that i've been looking at is clearly an out-dated version. Does anyone have a copy of the bill that was passed through the House? Even if the bill excludes segways, I think we still need to push for legislation that clearly allows us to ride segways responsibly on sidewalks without the fear of being harrassed by authorities.

There should be an update on this issue in a few days. I can assure you that people are working hard to resolve this matter and it is being taken very seriously. FYI: Mr. Levenson has reached numerous people already, thanks.

Overall, the MA legislation has not yet been completed, so we can not yet confirm that the segway's legal status is safe or not.

Hopefully the right people will soon comprehend the incredible benefits and superb safety record of the HT.

Thanks!
