View Full Version : Thankful for the breakaway kickstand . . .

Tonight, I was being a little mindless and put my i-series HT in balance mode -- and then stepped on. I started moving backwards and then craaaaack! There was a kickstand laying on the ground :)
I don't know for sure, but it seems to me that I would have kept on moving back, or otherwise been in a bit of danger, if it had not broken off. Maybe I'm just imagining things, but it was one of those "wow, I'm glad they thought of that" moments. I know of someone who rode up against a pipe over and over again once and lost control -- and the thought of my HT not being able to move freely brings back those thoughts.

Chris, is this your first broken kickstand???

Just curious, was this the new I series or one that is a year or so old?
If the kickstand is long enough you can not put the Seg in Balance Mode.
I think LLC did change the length sometime back but I don't think they changed the quality of the plastic. So if you are not careful it will still break.
If the kickstand is long enough it is very hard (or almost impossible)to stand on the Seg when the stand is down.

This is the very reason that LLC gives for kickstands that do break.
One might even remember a particular president, I don't recall which one, that stepped on a machine that was not in balance mode, and I must guess that it's kickstand also broke...

Wayne's right, you must have had the "old style" kickstand, as the newer model tilts the platform at such a precarious angle, you could never engage balance mode with the stand extended.
More than likely, your stand wasn't fully retracted and caught on debris. I've broken two by catching them in reverse, one on a rug and another on visqueen plastic. That has led me to design and manufacture (in small quantities) of a stainless kickstand that locks in both the up and down positions.

The kickstand was the new i170 kickstand. The machine did go into balance mode, although the kickstand may have been sunk a bit into the dirt (instead of concrete).
Yes, this is the first broken kickstand. 14+ months and thousands of miles of riding, and one broken kickstand :)

Something as simple as a break-a-way kickstand. Was this machine thought out or what? After almost two years, I still consider it as close to the most perfect machine I have ever purchased-and I haven't broke the kickstand, yet. It even outshines the 1988 300E Mercedes-I thought it was pretty good also-finally gave it up after over 300,000 miles. Can never see myself giving the HTi up as long as it glides.

Ron, Maybe you'll be compelled to give up the HT i, for an HT j-series... or whatever newfangled thing LLC comes out with... I have never seen a company with as much attention to detail, safety, and general common sense when developing a product.
