I have some scratches on my control stick that are just starting to show rust. I’ve asked LLC for some touch-up paint and was told there is no touch-up paint – bummer! Below is a statement I found when I searched LLC’s web site on “paint”. I’m guessing the CS is a sealing surface as the nut must lock down on a clean surface. If it rusts out if won’t be a smooth surface with rust on it. They don’t have any touch-up paint and replacing the CS is way too expensive just for some small scratches, any suggestions on covering the scratches?

"The materials and finishes of the Segway™ Human Transporter (HT) were engineered as part of the overall system, with an eye toward both aesthetics and function. Although some of the trim pieces may be painted without harm (fenders, outer portion of wheels, but not the rim), adding paint to many of the Segway HT's surfaces will compromise their functionality. Paints or other coatings (such as decorative stickers or decals) may also affect the material's strength and durability. Additionally, painting some parts of your Segway HT may affect environmental sealing.
In as much as the painting or other customization caused the damage to a component, directly or indirectly, we would not cover the damage of that specific part under warranty. Segway LLC might need to inspect the product to determine whether we would cover the damaged part. Your warranty remains in effect for unrelated components."

If you feel comfortable removing your handlebar, I will trade you an upper control shaft.

I thought the CS was aluminum. What are they made from? Does anyone know?

It is aluminum. I took a tooth brush, soap and water, and cleaned out the grime. Nice and shiny!

Whew! For aminute, I suspected LLC was making these things out of cheap pot metal with a fake aluminum finish. Nice to know they are what they are marketed as; a paradigm of technology, form, and function.

No cheap pot metal on the HT, they are made out of Unumtaianium, it washes easly with soap and water, but paint flakes off, it's better than teflon, but put it in the back of a SUV on a hot day with the AC on it comes out like a Ice Cube, I think this material was made for the Spacecraft.

But what do I know?

I removed my CS recently for the second time in almost a year and a half, to ship the HT to Iowa for a vacation. I found that the bottom of the tube was black (corrosion?), possibly due to rain getting past the seal on occasion. It cleaned up pretty well with a scotchbrite pad and a lot of elbow grease, but are there any suggestions for protecting it without it getting lubricated so much that it couldn't be tightened sufficiently?
