My twice-broken-in-three-weeks segway is finished! I'll be picking it up either tonight or tomorrow morning.

I called segway to see what caused the safety shutdown that dreaded Friday two weeks ago (the day I received it back from maintenance the first time). I was immediately connected with Judy who said I'd been moved up the list to be repaired to make up for it having broken right after getting it back -- they're so great there.

Apparently (and I've never heard of this happening), a motor needed to be replaced! I was surprised -- I'd never heard of one of these motors failing, and I didn't think it was even possible to accurately detect a motor failure before it happened! Good thing it did too, or I would have fallen face first.

Even after having had this bad experience, I can't help feeling more confident in the technology -- so much so that it can save the rider before such a major failure.

It was away from home a total of one week! I sent it out last Tuesday, and here I found out today (Tuesday) that it's back on the island! I hope to pick it up tonight...

Good luck and good gliding.

Watch out for that Baha riding technique!

Geez!!! Wow! A failing motor! And the Glider knows to let the rider off gently! Wonderful machines I tell you, just like Justin, I marvel at these devices.

This illustrates Segway LLC commitment to safety with redundant systems and the HT's constant self-checking.

The motors have two completely seperate windings in them so that if one winding in a motor fails, the other winding can safely bring the machine to a stop with the rider still on. However, during power on after that, the HT knows the motor is bad and will not start up.

I have read a tech meno about the fact that the latest software performs a more strict check of the sensors on the motors and to be prepared for possible failures after the upgrade.
