View Full Version : An Ode to Slime

Okay, so I'm not _actually_ going to write an ode :)

But a quick story: the other day, I was trying to find a "shortcut" and ended up in a field full of thorns, on my slimed i-series wheels.

I ended up with no fewer than twenty or thirty thorns in my i-series wheels (which have Slime Super Duty for Tubeless Tires in them) and got them all out by pushing them out with my shoes (which I'm sure didn't help to make the holes any smaller, but I didn't have any pliers with me, etc.)

Four days later, I'm not losing any air that I can detect at all.

Yeay; Slime likely saved the day!

Highly recommended.

Chris

You slime them the same way you slime any other tires. Just follow the instructions on the bottle.

Chris, we finished sliming ours, the other day. Tip to everyone who wants to slime, buy either two 8 ounce bottles or a 16 ounce bottle. You'll need 8 ounces per tire.

Fear not, for even though I come from the Forbidden City, I surely do not agree with the rules.

Umm, didn't I say this almost a year ago? And then again after you nearly blew yourself up along with your Segway using the instant-repair-in-a-can stuff?

Yeah, Slime is godly. But don't forget - you need that multi-tool I talked about - something to clean out the valve once you put the stuff through there - if you don't clean the threads and the inside of the tube, you will have one ubergunked HT tire.

Also, bear in mind that Slime has a certain lifetime on tires. I recently replaced mine because I was seeing enough slow leaks to justify replacing them.

The way it works is this - you have ~6 months before you first have to top off the tires (same amount as before). Then it'll be another 3-5 months. Bear in mind though that this is going over major areas of glass daily - most people will do fine with a top-off every six months.

My current tires don't have Slime in them, although I do need to get around to that.

Neelix - you don't need 8 oz. per tire, actually - although that would probably be prudent. I found that 4 oz. works quite well. That way one bottle will last you generally for a year. You want to find something like a weight bench or a stool to place your seg on, then just power assist it (this was so much better with the 10.0 FW) until you get an even coating. You'll know when the leak is sealed when you can leave your tire for 1-2 hours and not have any leakage. Remember to check the next day as well.

And the type of Slime to use is "Slime Super Duty Tire Sealant" - it's designed for tubeless tires, and they aren't kidding when they say it's good for punctures up to 1/4" - I've hit some big stuff before.
