View Full Version : Software Upgrades - Free Forever?

I recently bought a used Segway that has not been upgraded to the latest software. Segway said they want to upgrade to the latest software and will pay to have the Segway shipping to them for the upgrade and then back to me. Is this normal? (Safety Concern)
Are software upgrades free forever? Do you always have to send the Segway back to New Hampshire? Are there service points in the Southwest? (AZ, CA, UT, NV, NM)

The upgrade to v12.0 was free because Segway did a voluntarily recall to upgrade the units. If you're already on 12.0 and just want a free software upgrade (which wouldn't do too much, I imagine), then yes you'll probably have to pay for the shipping, etc.
But if you're pre-12.0 (you can tell because there will be sticker on the back of the base that says 12.0 _and_ when you shut down you don't just get the top bar visible with the "going to sleep" blinky), then your upgrade should be completely free of charge -- and on-site.

It's soon to be on it's way to me, waiting for a shipping container from Segway. No stickers, so have to assume that it's pre-12.0. By on-site do you mean someone from Segway comes to me and upgrades the software? One of the CS reps thought that I'd have to arrange to have the unit shipped to Segway for the upgrade. But they said they would pay for it because it was a safety upgrade.
Would much rather have it done locally if they knew what they were doing. Segway will get more air miles than me this year if not!

WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU EVER WANT 12!?!
Feel lucky that you have an 11 machine!
12 software is more constricting than the other versions.
I have tried Versions-
8
10
11
12
And version 8 is by far the most fun!

Matt,
How would I determine what software version I have?
I wzs told that it is "safety" concern which caused a voluntary "recall" by Segway, is that not the case.
Is this a "Here's your Sign" kind of update, like the blade clutch on your lawnmower to keep you from trying to pick it up and use it as a hedge trimmer by curling your fingers under the deck?
Thanks

Mattk,
What's 8 like? Was that a pre-pre-release model??

Yup a pre-release machine, it has tighter turning and understands traction differently- that can make for a wild ride. Its not as good on range though.

Try 12.1, and while it's not like my 10.0 was, it is a lot better and 12.0. Much more was done in this change, no matter what LLC is telling us. There is a world of difference.

Just to clarify, the 12.0 stickers were only put on the 12.0 machines (and maybe on some of the 12.1 recall upgrades, maybe not). The new 12.1 machines do not have stickers.
Man, I want to try 8.0 :)

If the Seg ever catches on big, like LLC was thinking it would, I'm sure another company will produce an aftermarket fix to give the Seg some get-up and go. Unless the performance and battery range gets better (not worse) I don't see the Seg breaking any sales records.
With the performance (12.0), slow speed and weak batteries if I was a big company or organization I would not consider the Seg as a tool. It's a great toy and every kid in America should have one.
Better performance, a little more speed (for the P anyway) and some 25 to 30 mile range batteries would really go a long way in increasing sales.
How many of you want to go for an all afternoon glide to find out that you had better stay within walking distance from home?
