I was wondering, how many Segway owners out there have canes?
Myself, I have some balance issues and use a cane. My concern is that if I purchase A Segway HT how to carry my cane with me. For the ones who glide with a cane what solution have you come to with regards to storing your canes onboard the Segway.

Sling it over the handlebars, if it's of a J shape.
You'll find that it impresses passersby.

if you are traveling fast or on bumpy surface, it may be best to use a couple of "bungie cords" or other method to secure the cane from falling forward and onto the path of the HT.

A custom cane holder would be a neat accessory and could allow easy access, yet remain secure during the bumpiest of glides.

Larry,

One of our members in San Francisco has an HT and a cane, and it seems to work out great. You should be able to attach it to the front of the control shaft, or hang it over the handlebars.

Have you had a chance to try on a Segway HT yet?

The other option, in my mind would be to get a foldig came and put it in the bag.

I have a cane with me all of the time. I have a wrist strap on the cane and put the loop of the wrist strap over the handle bars. The strap is at a length so that the foot of the cane rests on the platform. This works great for me, been doing it for over a year now.

This looks nice; I bet one could retrofit it to the Segway's much larger vertical shaft (control shaft):

I believe QuadSquad sometimes uses a cane off his HT...

I think his input would be very valuable on this matter.

I hook my cane over the handle bar with the control bar height set so the cane does not quiet touch the base but yet does not clear the front lip of the base. The lip prevents the cane from swinging forward.

Aaaah, finally a subject I know something about!

If you really need a cane to get around, and I'm not talking about you fancy Dansi's, but those who really need a tool to get the job done, there's really only one choice out there today. As a matter of fact in the very near future you'll be able to buy them on my web site, but that's another subject altogether.

The cane that everyone should be using, and many of my friends are, is made by none other than Leki, the same company who makes high-quality ski poles. It's lightweight, it's fully adjustable, available with a medical grip, and one of the most unique features is that while it comes with a rubber tip, once that rubber tip is removed there is a carbide tip underneath it. If you use a cane and you've encountered a slick surface, you realize just how treacherous it can be. The carbide tip bites into ice, greasy restaurant floors, and any other slick surface. It also comes with a basket for the end to prevent its sinking into soft surfaces.

It also has a cord attached to the handle which I simply hang over my handlebar. It's not expensive and it's the only way to go. If you can't find it, it is available on their web site at www.Leki.com

Below is a picture of Leonard and I visiting Mel Mellinger at the Headhunters plant in Fort Lauderdale Florida. Notice the cane hanging from my right handlebar. And by the way that object that you see in front of us is one of the highest-quality segway transporters I've ever seen, it fits into your trailer hitch and is manufactured by Headhunters, and I know that in the future they'll have even more options that will benefit people with disabilities.

I second Jerry's recommendation for the Leki. I use the exact model pictured above and it works great. Lightweight, comfortable handle, and it has a little bit of a spring to it as you push down and then let up.

I, too, simply hang the cord over the handlebar.

I just wanted to thank everyone so far for their input. Some great seggestions and pictures. I will have to go check out Jerry's cane.

I'm working on a product now to help people with canes and also people with wheelchairs who need to store their cane on the wheelchair. Thought that if I modify it a little it might work on the Segway. Now I just have to get a Segway to be able to do some testing.:)

Although you guys and gals have some cool solutions.
I'll see what I can do.

Chris... Yes I did get to try out a Segway HT. I went to a local Brookstones and took a Demo glide. Great Fun...:) Thanks for asking.

Not only is it a great cane, well designed and ergonomic. It looks right at home on a Segway.
