Bruce here in LA.
Now that it's spring, I've been wanting to go out for a glide!
Anyone up for a glide in LA this Saturday?

Hi, Bruce! Dick and I are game if you're willing to let us Orange County folks tag along! Do you have a location in mind?
(And are we about to be moved to the Event thread?)

Sorry, Fred. As a proud new papa, I have to schedule around baby needs!
Great Janice & Dick.
Yeah, I guess that when it becomes an actual time and place this'll get moved to Events.
Any suggestions as to a place? I've been thinking about Griffith Park, but the last organized LA glide was there.

I think Griffith Park was actually Dick's idea back then, but in retrospect I don't think it was that conducive to gliding--narrow roads and a lot of cars. After that, Toybuilder arranged a glide in Long Beach (Shoreline Village or whatever they call it) that was quite nice, but I think he worked with someone to get special permission.

What about Beverly Hills?
Lake Balboa Park is pretty nice, with wild areas and a park lake, with glide paths all around it. Also a cool Model RC airport! And an RC off-road car raceway.
The cherry-blossom trees should be in bloom, too.

It's also where the Japanese Gardens are that were the location for Starfleet Academy on Star Trek (but you can't get in there without reservations).
Here's a web-site with lots of great photos of the park.

What about Beverly Hills? That might be fun, but it doesn't have really open gliding areas.

I'd like to join, but not yet sure of my schedule this weekend. I'll definitely want to stay posted.
As a suggestion, Westwood/UCLA is a good glide.

We're not at all familiar with the area, but it sounds like a good idea for Saturday. Shall we wait for more concrete responses before the three of us commit?

It's really close to my house. So why don't you guys come up with a time to meet. I'll be able to make it whenever.

I have been told not to use my Segway at Balboa Park. The rangers say that it is under Federal jurisdicition, so Segways are not allowed. The Sepulveda Dam was built by the US Army Corp of Engineers, and the entire flood control area is leased to the city for recreational purposes.

Dave, it's not allowed on the bike trails?
That's crazy. Are you SURE? I've seen tons of electric scooters on those trails.

Hi,
Checking in (from the local public library, internet's down at home, ugh!).
Folks, let's get in touch off-board, and we can post the info when we settle on a meeting time and place.
Dick & Janice, please call my cell phone at (removed so spambots dont surf it), and we'll square up details.
Hopefully someone will post the info for me when we set it up.

Hi, folks. Got wrapped up in the Laker game and forgot to post. Yes, there will be an L.A. Glide tomorrow (Saturday, April 10). We will meet at 11 a.m. at the model airport parking lot at Balboa Park/Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area. Generally that's northwest of where the 405 and 101 meet, if you're looking for it on a map. And the model airport appears to be at the northwest corner of the intersection of Burbank Blvd. & Woodley Ave. So far it's just three of us, but maybe one of you nightowls will see this and decide to join us in the morning!
Should be a beautiful day!
Dick and Janice
So any pictures?

No pictures yet, but they're coming. It was a great day! There turned out to be seven of us! Dave and Poohbear (Kristin) were there along with Bruce, Dick and myself, and the pleasant surprise was Seggy (Ari) and his girl friend Nan, who have certainly kept a low profile on the Board! Seggy admitted he reads the Chat all the time but doesn't post much; he happened to see the late-night posting and decided to join us. (Edit: Just checked--he NEVER posts! Seggy!)
Kristin and Nan were on P's and the rest of us on I's. I think Bruce and Dick, who helped lift Kristin's in and out of her car, were pleased to learn first-hand how much easier it was to lift than what they were used to.
The location Bruce chose was ideal for our glide, and we went about 8.5 miles, mostly on a very nice bike trail. We fit in with the pedestrians, skaters and bicyclists just fine, of course. The area is huge, so there was lots of activity in different parts of the park. They even have a cricket field! The sun finally broke through the haze not long after we started. Shortly after noon we were at the golf course and had lunch in their coffee shop. As you all know, it's not that easy to carry on a conversation while gliding single file, so we enjoyed the opportunity to visit over lunch.
The only demos we gave were to folks who gathered around us in the model airport parking lot as we were meeting, but I know we were getting a lot of attention from passing motorists.
Ari was our official photographer and promised to get the photos to Bruce, so I'm sure you'll see a picture or two pretty soon. It was a fine day, and our thanks go to Bruce for getting the ball rolling. Dick and I truly enjoyed meeting everyone; Dave was the only one we'd met already at Griffith Park last year. We look forward to another glide with these nice folks, and hope to see some of the rest of you who were at last year's L.A. gatherings!
Janice
See my recent post about a cheap way to have conversations while gliding in a group or 3 or less.
