View Full Version : Passing the buck...

IndiFirstEngineer and I went gliding for the first official SEG Indiana meeting and glide this past Sunday.

First off it turned out to be a beautiful sunny day, though it could have stood to being 10 degrees warmer.

We glided throughout the center of Indianapolis, all the way up and down the canal, through a part of White River State Park, ate at Hooters (can't leave that out) , and then caught the NASCAR 3D IMAX Film at the Museum.

By the way, Stu was looking sharp in his decked out Segway. (see picture)

Oh we gave several demos, especially a couple each to 4 Purdue Marching Band members, in return we both got to whack that drum!

We entered the IMAX theater on or Segs (picture it, the lobby of the Theater is about a big as 1/2 an arena without seats, it's huge, and there weren't too many people). We went to the reception desk, and asked about the times of the movies and the female at the desk was curious about our machines. As we were standing still, many people gathered, and asked us questions, and a security guard came up to us and asked us to leave stating that he didn't want us to mark up the floor. Stu pointed out that the tires are designed not to mark the floors, at which point he said that we weren't allowed to ride our segways in there, so we got off.

We bought tickets for the 3:30 show, and asked the powers that be if we could park out gliders against the wall and lock them up when we watched the movie, we also asked if we could plug them in.

This is when the unbelievable helplessness began. NOONE would say yes, everyone began passing the buck, well you'd have to ask security, well security asked us to ask you, another gentleman said he would ask the mgr on duty. And the passing of the buck continued.

We were told that right before the movie started, they'd have an answer for us, so we left and ate. Hooters, by the way allowed us to glide in and out, as well as park and plug our Segways.

When we came back to the IMAX theater, we rode in on the 2nd level and then took the elevator down and glided the 10 feet from the elevator to the small hallway behind the reception desk, there were 2 people at the reception desk, the friendly lady we saw at first, and another much older gentleman who we hadn't seen before.

We asked them if it was okay to park them right behind the desk. The older gentleman said he would have to ask security. The lady remembered us and said she didn't mind. I locked both of them up we plugged them in and went in to watch the movie.

All in all, no final decision was made by anyone there. Stu and I couldn't believe that some people can't make simple decisions, and take some responsibility for something harmless.

This wasn't a "job is on the line" situation. We paid good money to watch a movie, and all we were asking was to park 2 Segways in very less traveled corridor.

Stu commented, as we were gliding out that it's strange that there would be so much commotion and indecision about a novel device like the Segway at a Museum of all places.

Sorry I missed the glide. If I had known it was going to be that much of a challenge I would have had to be there. But it never got above 40 in Liberty. And to think the I-Max was my idea. Was the movie worth the $8.50?

Hey Wen,

How about that Segway !!! I am working with Chariotmedia to help do some testing and refine their design.

We did miss you. It WAS very cold, and windy. Next time I'm sure it will be much warmer. Can't remember the last time I paid to see a movie in a theater ... call me a cheapskate ... it's just hard for me to swallow spending that kind of money to sit in the dark for a couple of hours. The Nascar movie was OK, 3D effects were good, but could have been better, and it was only an hour (but I guess that was enough). I have to say I don't think it was as good as the last movie I saw at the Imax ... Matrix, Re-loaded. Now THAT was cool on the HUGE screen.

It will be GREAT when we can get more Segways on a group glide downtown. I think Indianapolis is a great place to glide. I've always gotten loads of positive reaction, and a larger group will really turn some heads ...

Hey Wen,

I would have to agree with Stu about the movie, it was all right. But to me it seemed like a commercial for NASCAR.. It did have it's cool high points though.

Was it worth $8.50? --It's arguable! LOL

You HAVE to make it next time, we did have a great glide, and got a great reception everywhere we went.

Hope to see both you and Stu soon.

Wow Stu thats a great pic. Looks like lots of fun. For some reason I can't enlarge the picture to see whats on the Chariot Media skin. I'd like to see that Chariot skin if I could. I think they could improve the skin a little just by leaving the top part straight acrosss from the hand grips clear with no skin just to give the impression of a windshield. Ya get a chance give me a e-mail, I'd like to see and hear more about the Chariot Skins program. Sorry , I missed the I-Max That place is really cool. I thought you guys were going to glide on Saturday. What happened? It was a better day for gliding wasn't it? Oh Stu, I have a new e-mail address the old one won't work. Send it to my new e-mail address in my profile. Hey Wendal.

Ken, we sure would have liked to have you... due to time constraints the glide was pushed back to Sunday.

If you click once on the picture you should be able to see a slightly larger version.

It says: "Robodevils"

Dooh, I should have figured. I thought it was a new logo for the Boilermakers. I figured why I couldn't enlarge it. It was because I had the pop-up blocker on. I don't like getting sales ads interrupting me when I'm busy trying to read or check out something. Know what I mean? Hey, Hooters is a great place to seg to, and they even let you charge it, too. At least in downtown Indy. I got a great pic of a demo Stu gave to one of the girls. I went last fall with Stu, Wen, Frank and Auri. Watched a Colts game. What ever happened to Auri? He still using that P. Haven't heard from him since then.

Maybe one day we can get a "regional" glide together, between Indy, St. Louis and Chicago, in a place like Springfield or Bloomington ... or some other equidistant place. That'd be really fun.

Brooster! THAT WOULD BE FANTASTIC!!!!!

The weather is getting nice as well, let's not just talk about it, let's make it happen. I think all of us here in the near midwest would love to make a day-trip of it.

How about it everyone???? I know you're all reading this... what do you all say?

Let's do it. We'll all meet at some Red Roof Inn or Super8 or Holiday Inn, and have a hell of a time. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. We'll keep in touch on this. We have a whole season ahead of us.

Oh, "Pass the buck" refers to all of those people at the museum who said we should ask others for permission to park our gliders.
