View Full Version : Why the Segway is better than the Q in one image

It's all about stability.
Assuming the Q could climb this hill. It can't, of course, it has almost no power. But this dramatizes the stability issue wonderfully.

Hey, if the Q can levitate like that, I'd buy one. :)
Seriously though, the Q rider wouldn't be tilting back like that.. they too would be standing plumb and normal. The platform would be tilted back, not the rider, who would presumably have flexed ankles.
I'm no cheerleader for the Q, but the rider is asked for the same flexibility on a sideways incline (riding across a hill) using the Segway. The platform tilts, the rider flexes to lean 'uphill' with the shaft to the side. If you don't, you tip over on either the Segway or Q.
The Q has many shortcomings, but this particular one doesn't seem so unworkable.

Ground Loop,
You bring up an interesting point.
On a bicycle, going up a hill, I am sitting straight, but not straight with gravity.
On a Q toy scooter, does one stand straight, or lean forward? When one leans forward to try to be "upright," do they run into the handlebar with their waist?
As a person or a person using a Segway HT, we don't have any of these problems, but I am curious from the photo. Also, going downhill on a Q, is one leaning forward while standing straight (like in a car or on a bike), or does one lean back away from the scooter to be straight with gravity?

Groundloop,
You can't lean forward on the Q. The handlebars are in the way.

The handlebars will never get in the way because the Q could never go up a hill with enough 'degree' grade... must be a built in safety feature :)

Could the Q even go up a slope like that??

Even if the Q did have all of the maneuverability of the HT, it will never have the technology. Q-Tip: It's still a 'toy'...

Hello.
In the my local Sunday paper this week, there was an ad insert for Pep Boys. So naturally I looked to see if the Q was included in the pamphlet. It was strategically placed on the left hand side of the page entering to the right and all you could see were the two big wheels. The back wheels were not shown because they were off the page. It really made it look like a Segway with only 2 wheels. Then of course it mentions that it costs only $999 compared to similar product priced at $4500. I assume this was intentionally placed on the page like this. Very clever.

IMO: From the way you described it that crosses the line into fraud.

We can't complain about the Q's marketing, fraudulent or not--at least they are marketing. My wife saw a Segway at a Brookstone in Boston--it was gathering dust in a corner.

What I still can't understand is how they can get away with calling it a similar product. I agree with Jeff on this one. Purposely cutting off a part of the product just to get people to mistake it for a Segway is rather devious.
ff, there's marketing and there's deception, that ad was being very deceptive.

I saw a Segway in the window at Brookstone. It was attracting gawkers every few minutes.
Too bad they weren't demoing it.

Yeah, 3 weekends ago I went by my local Brookstones and did a bunch of demos just outside the store. <G> Brookstones was ecstatic, they didn't have to claim me or worry about insurance. I'll be doing it again before too much longer. Probably with the 'p' the next time. The local store has an 'i' on display.
