Just an interesting article about Lithium Ion batteries I thought I would share.

LiFePO4 -- sounds good to me :)

I was under the impression that LiIon Polymer technology had taken care of a lot of the density and safety issues. Hmmm.

If you reduce energy density there is no need to utilize Li Ion over anything else.

Conversly anytime ou have that much energy density your going to have a problem.

Same reason that Nuclear reactors are dangerous, as well as Gasoline or anyother flammable liquid.

How far away do you think superconductor technology is, as far as batteries go? If we could get a "superconductor battery" for the HT, even at $500 each, lots of us would buy them :)

Er ah, what would a sduperconducting battery do?

The loss of juice is negligible. If we ever do get room temprature superconductors, Segways will probably become obsolete, and it would only be a minor thing compared to all the other stuff it would make much better.

Sid,

The more I think about the article you <s>wrote</s> mention, the more I'm glad that Segway is watching out for our safety by releasing "no battery before its time."

As far as superconductors making the Segway obsolete, I'd like to think that there will always be a need for a space-efficient, pedestrian-friendly personal transporter.

Just to clarify, I didn't write the article. Charlie is a good guy though.

<s>McFeelme</s> Sid,

:)

Sorry for the confusion. I meant "mentioned" not "wrote." We can have spellcheckers; why can't we have thought-checkers?!?

Anyway, here's something that's a bit off-topic, but still in the future energy realm. Nanosolar is working on solar cells that will pay for themselves in just 3 months instead of the current 48 months (if that short of time).

So we could buy solar cells for $3.60 that would take care of our $1.20 a month in Segway charging needs! Even if it were possible to spend a few thousand dollars (like $2k - $3k) to outfit a home with solar panels, it would easily be worth it for the energy independence.

Hmm, I wonder if they need door-to-door sales people! Ha ha.
