I am going to travel to New York at the beginning of March. I have a walking disability and the Segway is incredible. I have a handicap tag. I need to know what the restricitons are on the use of the Segway there. I will be spending most of my time in the Broadway Theater and Greenwich Village districts.

The responses will affect my trip! Do I need special permission to use it in NYC? You can respond here or emailme at gizork@hotmail.com

It's illegal. Did you think the laws had changed since you asked last week?

Again, it is illegal. The chances are good that you won't be bothered, and if you are, you can probably talk your way out of a ticket if you have a hadicap tag. However, it is still illegal and therefore there is nothing you can do to get "special permission".

Gizork,

Yes, it is illegal. BUT, I bet noone will bother you. I often visit my parents in NY, and I have NOT once been asked to stop gliding by ANY of the authorities. That is not to say that I'm not worried... I don't have a disability...

I pity the officer who tells you to stop after seeing your handicap tag.

Even though they are illegal, I wouldn't worry about it from the standpoint of being a tourist, you don't know... Besides, If I hadn't made it clear in the above paragraph, you above all HAVE more of a right to glide than others; you NEED it to get around.

Have fun!

Thank you for your posts. I was not entirely clear on some things but now I am. I will take it, since I canntot walk more than a couple of blocks and it is, after all, New York. Wish me well.

Gizork,

Also, even the City and County of San Francisco have indicated that riding a Segway on sidewalks is A-OK for disabled persons, as would be riding around in a wheelchair.

Have your doctor write a note saying that you require a powered mobility aid. If you get stopped, make sure you are familiar with the ADA.
