View Full Version : Weather Conditions for Segging?

Florida Ever-Glides

It's pouring here today but we're going to still try to go on the tour this afternoon. Cancelled this morning because of the lightning.
The rain is supposed to stop, so it should be safe.

I'm interested in knowing the harshest weather conditions other chat members have glided in. Thanks.

Gliding in the rain is fun as long as you are dressed right. Because you are in Florida all you will need is a umberella to hold in your right hand. Just be aware that it can be slippery when wet. When I have been out in the rain the only thing dry when I get home is the bottom of my feet. Watch out for deep standing water. Have fun :D

I have been down to the shore line in the sand in the rain and if you dont step off the only dry thing is your shoes. Watch out for sharks.

Find the way. Everything comes full circle.

I rode home on a p-series one day in a very light blizzard. A friend saw me and asked if I wanted a ride on the way home, which I declined :)

On my way home, a neighbor mentioned that I looked like a snowman.

I don't like gliding in the lightning though. I really wish we could get an expert opinion and statistical analysis on the risk inherent in that condition.

it has a nice ring to it

A healthy adult can draw in about 200 to 300 cubic inches (3.3 to 4.9 liters) of air at a single breath, but at rest only about 5% of this volume is used.

Right handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left handed people do.

The average cough comes out of your mouth at 60 miles (24 km) per hour.

If the population of China walked past you in single file, the line would never end because of the rate of reproduction.

The average person spends about 2 years on the phone in a lifetime.

Segwayowner (Dan) Thanks for all of the trivia - hope that you have fact checked it all!

Tom - Last Sunday it was pouring here in LA. It doesn't rain here often enough that we are foolish enough to enjoy it! I went on a glorious ride including grass as well as on slippery surfaces without incident. Common sense says that you don't make a power stop on a slippery surface. We have one spot with steps in front of a building that the flat part is about 20 inches deep and I had fun going down the 4 steps (and back up the handicapped ramp to perfect it. Rain is fine for ducks and segs!

segwayowner,

Be aware that permanent damage can happen to your NiMH batteries at -4 F. At -10 F, your Seg is getting frostbitten quickly :)

Speaking of weather, it's 43 F here right now. That may not sound warm, but I was just riding around next to a bunch of people who were outside walking around. Fun, fun, fun!

Hey Tom;

We were out in a pouring drenching rain last summer in midtown NYC. We got soaked to the skin and it was great even though I hate being outside in the rain since my days of working outside.

The Segway performed flawlessly and the only minor problem I had was having to wipe off the key socket to get it to turn on. No problems stopping or slipping even though some of the surfaces were extremely smooth.

Have fun 'Seggin' in the rain'. (I can picture Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dacing on Segways on a rainy day).

I don't mind the rain and have ridden the Seg home from work a couple of times recently when it was coming down pretty good. When dressed properly, it is not too bad. The thing I don’t like is having to dry everything off before bringing it into my apartment.

I rode my i to work on what turned out to be the rainiest day ever recorded in Seattle (5+ inches). I had the ET tires on, which probably helped, but had no problems, in spite of deep puddles and streets that looked more like streams. I'm sure that drivers thought I was out of my mind, but hopefully they were as impressed as I was that the machine could perform in those conditions.

yeah, i figured that out. I find that it is extremely sluggish and slow, although when it warms up after about 10 min all comes back to normal...

Dan, I'm right handed but look at

which indicates that your trivia regarding life expectancy of left handers is not correct.

It was raining all day today, but apparently the rain decided to turn to snow as the sun set.

Well, I thought it was snow. I had to ride about 8 miles. It was about 34 F outside. The snow was actually snow-sized ice. It hurt my face to ride in it, so I got our my ski mask and put it on. Then everything was fine.

I passed a gentleman on a bicycle while going up a big hill. I turned to go into a parking lot but couldn't take it as slow as I wanted to because the guy on the bike would have probably biffed it trying to move. The ground was nasty super-slick. It was bad, like the first time it snows and lots of accidents occur. I wish I would have had a set of ETTs on, or Zorba's tires.

Anyway, lets just say that the Segway can kind of power-slide in turns on ice yet still maintain balance if you keep your balance just right :) Not recommended, but yet another amazing thing.

I back-tracked on some of the path later tonight, and I could see my lonely set of earlier tire tracks in the frozen ground (chunks of icy junk), with nary any other footprints or tiretracks most of the way. My Segway was making a "crunching ice" sound much of the way home.

I've frequently gone to and from work in the rain, Tom. A poncho draped over the handle bars and the only thing that actually got damp was my feet - and then not very. Had to be careful not to grab the handlebars and the poncho together - that keeps you from being able to lean back when you want to stop. I had to take my glasses off, because I didn't have windshield wipers for them <G>.

I met Zorba last night - and saw his tires. What a delightful man! We had dinner at Cracker Barrel and I showed him a short cut to Birmingham. Lots of good Segway talk. I definitely want to get down to Sarasota some day to see your operation, Tom. (I lived down there in the late 60's)

That reminds me of the first day of Segway Fest. We were on the morning glide from Printers Row. A certain Segway employee on a P series impressed the hell out of me when he power slided to a stop on the gravel near that big fountain. He was going fast, kicked it sideways and skidded to a stop.

I have yet to try that.
