Segway inventor to address TechConnex

In addition to inventing the motorized scooter-like device, Dean Kamen is also known for inventing a wheelchair that climbs stairs and other devices.

The Segway caused a sensation when it was released in late 2001, with supporters predicting it would ultimately revolutionize the way communities and city planners perceived transportation. So far, Segway LLC, the Manchester, N.H., company Kamen founded to develop and market the device, has reportedly sold more than 6,000 of them, but they remain a relatively rare sight on city streets.

TechConnex, which seeks to serve as a catalyst organization to boost local information technology businesses, is an affiliate of the Center for Economic Growth, an economic development organization.

During the luncheon, which will be held at noon on April 1 at the Desmond Hotel and Conference Center in Colonie, awards will be presented for the best local technology companies. Nominations are currently being sought for the categories of Innovator, Rising Star, Intern of the Year, Economic Winner, Cybertopia, E-trepreneur of the Year, and Most Philanthropic.
