Today was the New York City First Lego League tournament, and it was a smashing success! There were at least two Segways running around (Segway Bill being one, and I'm afraid I didn't get the name of the other person). For an overview of what the day looked like, take a peek at: http://www.rosetechven.com/FLL2004NYC_Panorama.JPG
What a great day!

PS: The Mighty Machines of PS 280, which I have the honor of sponsoring, took home the trophy for Best Teamwork. Congratulations to all!

Hey, that was me giving the demos on Saturday at FIRST Lego League in NYC. Thanks for mentioning it. I gave way over 100 demos to kids and adults in an exhausting 4.5 hours straight without a break.
That is us in the panoramic picture just to the left of the large TV screen. You can see one of the kids with a black shirt on the Segway traveling to the right towards the screen. I am in front of him obscured by the dark shadow of the screen.
It started when the first adult volunteer asked me if he could try it. I agreed and then another asked, etc. Then a line formed that did not clear until after the competition was over and I was the last one out, except for the crew sweeping the floor.
The vast majority of the demos were kids. They all waited very patiently in line and were all very well behaved. We worked in a very small space with lots of acvitivy all around us and people walking through. There was not one single incident of falling or bumping into anyone or anything - not even a a close call.
I know the kids got a great kick out of it. I was glad to give the rides to the kids and people that worked so hard in the FIRST program. I guess it was my little contribution to FIRST.
My machine did 3.5 miles on the odometer going back and forth and around in circles in that small space. And it only used 1/2 of one bar of battery power.
My only regret is that it seems I picked up a bug from the hundreds of hands on the handlebars and I am out of work for two days with a sore throat, fever and a cold. But I would still do it again in a minute. But I will bring lots of water for me to drink, though.
I am planning on attending the FIRST robotics competition regionals in March in Trenton, NJ.
