Hello !

are the segway batteries built in or can they be changed easyly (few minutes, no tools ?) and how heavy are they ?

Thank you

Bob.

The batteries are packaged into two sealed units each containing 60 cells (72v). Both units are bolted to the bottom of the Segway. (If you flip a Segway over, this is what you see.)

To change them, you remove four 3mm hex head screws from each pack and pull them off. It's not difficult, but it does require one tool.

Each battery is about 9.5 pounds.

Thanks for that answer.

That means that if i buy a segway and two more batteries i can
ride a 14 miles (about), then quickly remove the empty batteries
and put the full ones i have in my bagpack or in the segway paniers (19 pounds is not a heavy weight) and then ride 14 more miles ?

Bob.

Don't expect 14 miles per charge. The first few cycles you might get it... but not for too much longer after that. Expect to get about 10 miles. After a few hundred charges, expect about 6-8. Changing the batteries is kind of a pain. I don't know that you'd want to change them like that half way through your trip. Also, do you really want to be carrying an extra 20 lbs with you all the time? You would need to buy an off-board charger for your second set of batteries too, as it's not good to let NiMH batteries sit for extended periods of time.

Whatever happen to the new batteries that LLC were coming out with?
If I were LLC I would have new batteries on the market ASAP. We purchased (or I did) thinking that we could get 15 miles on a charge. If we knew beforehand that the miles would only be 7 to 10 miles what do you think this would have done to the sales.
Now new customers are hearing from us about the problems and the miles and I'm sure that is having something to do with the slow sales.

I have heard that the top priority is lithium ion batteries but there are some technical hurdles to conquer.

Wayne, you are such a nice guy it is sad to see you so upset these days.

Does anyone know of where to get the bit for my electric screw driver to quickly swap out batteries?

Good morning Fred,

How have you been?

I'm not upset I just get cranky in my old age. LOL

I just tell it like I see it. Yes I know, I should be quiet and take my medicine.

Take Care

I am one of those people that is waiting for more range before I make a move to purchase a Segway (probably have to get a loan). 15+ miles would be great. 10 miles.... OK. 7-8 miles probably won't cut it for me. ESPECIALLY since I have a disability and wouldn't be able to pull a "tired" Seg. I eagerly await the new batteries. The Segway itself is such an accomplishment, I'm sure LLC will come through with a battery solution.

fredkap: There is a drill bit set at Costco now that includes some common hex-head tips for a drill/screwdriver. (Includes a whole lot of stuff, actually.) If you need drill bits, check it out.
