Today the newest and largest cruise ship in the world came into Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale...the Queen Mary. The weather is perfect in the low 80's and sunny . I drove on down from Boca Raton about a 24 mile drive. Traffic was terrible once in Fort Laud....everyone was going to the 17th St Bridge , and many were stopping on the bridge to take photos and catch sight of the ship which really snarled traffic.
Well, I parked blocks away at a shopping strip, took my "p" out of the car and drove on up the bridge for a look. Yes ,that ship is VERY big and after some photos I segged a bit closer thru a small neighborhood on the east side of the intracoastal. I then rode further up to Fort Laud's Beach Strip , and then it was about time to head back. The "p" did as it always does...a great job getting me there and back safely with more fun than sitting in heavy traffic in a car. Some people got a bigger kick out of seeing a Segway than seeing the Queen Mary . ( one guy said his brothers company makes a chip thats in the Segway )

I work for Princess (Cunard is one of our sister companys). I've been thinking about asking everyone here if they are interested in Segway Cruise. Basically, we all go on as a group (better rates) and take the HTs with us. I'd have to call to each port on the itinerary and clear the use of Segways off the ship.

It might be fun. Maybe for Segway Fest '05?

Let me know if anyone is interested and I'll look into it. No guarantees. I have nothing to do with pricing, so I can't get deals for anyone or anything, but I could do as much as I can from an insiders perspective.

Cheers,

But, to your point ElectraGlide, the QM2 is the most beautiful ship in the world.

I would be interested in seeing how the e series e-stand does with some of the slight pitch and roll of the large ships out in open waters.

Disney already has a few on their ships. I hear they let passengers use them in port. Haven't verified that, just heard it at the watercooler.

Andrew,

That sounds like a blast. Maybe as a mid-year activity for those of us who can't stand waiting 8 more months for another SegwayFesT! :)

i love the new QM2, but unlike its gas economy... it goes 8 INCHES on ONE gallon of diesel.. thats one of the reasons i like the segway.....

it has a nice ring to it

8 inches on one gallon of diesel, eh? Is that cruising speed? Because a huge ship like that should have a TON of momentum after it gets going.

Fear not, for even though I come from the Forbidden City, I surely do not agree with the rules.

It would help get Segway on Cunard cruise ships and especially the QM2 if you went to the www.cunard.com site and go to the contact us page. Please ask Cunard if Segways are available and if useage by patrons is allowed. With enough queries they might start to think about it.

If you want to hit home even better, make sure you select either Sales or Shore Excursions in the "send to which department" menu. These two departments will have the most sway. Reservations will have the least.

While you're at it, send the same request to Princess. I could use some backup. You should call 1-800-PRINCESS.

We booked a May cruise on the QM. I was pretty excited until I realized that we had booked over a time of a very important wedding!!! We were lucky enough to have both our broker and Cunard allow us to change to November without a penalty - whew. I am really looking forward to it and would love to take my Seg along, but probably wont.

p.s. I love the Princess line - my absolute favorite.

It's a fun company to work for. Lots of neat things happening in '04-'05.

Well do you think I could open up a rental shop on the QM2??? Instruct passengers on the use of the Segway and give tours around the ship to help people familiarize themselves with the ship. It's more than large enough for a tour of the different levels. Can you imagine how many people would be exposed to the Segway.

Call the business Gliders At Sea or Segway Sea Glides and Tours or just plain Segways At Sea.

Then there could be a royal journal to sign for those who have had the privlige of being a member of the "Royal Segway Sea Gliders Club."
