My Segway is getting delivered on Friday! I was thinking of taking it home with me for Christmas. I thought I read about some people on SC who has taken their Segway as checked luggage on the airlines. Does anyone know a link to an old thread on this? I am flying Southwest.
Thanks.

I posted a similar thread last week or so:

I was referred to:

Also, fredkap sent me a Transit Access Report that had a great article on the different airlines and their policies regarding segways. If you're interest in the report, e-mail me, and I'll be happy to send it on.

Also...I saw some pictures of a plastic bin that Segway fit well in, does anyone know where I can find those pictures? I am planning on putting it in a box, taking the batteries off and placing them in my other piece of luggage, that should make it light enough? I think.

John Harrington posted the following months ago and it holds even better today since almost all Home Depots have the case.

I'm flying via American Airlines here soon. What do you think they would think if I put a p-series power base in one carry-on duffel (minus the wheels and the batteries) and put the tires, batteries, and control shaft in another carry-on? :)
I could also put the power base and batteries in one checked luggage piece and the wheels and control shaft in another.
What do you think is the best plan here? I wish the airlines would just let me bring it on the plane as my single carryon item :)

Chris,
When I flew American to SegFest, I spoke with their person in charge of wheelchairs and mobility devices. She said that since I wasn't disabled, that I wouldn't be able to check in the Segway. In fact, she said that even if I took it apart and shipped it as baggage, that they might turn me away at the airport because of the size of the batteries-- even though they're non-spillable dry cell. She said they might not let the baggage ship. So to be safe, I FedEx'd the batteries separate from the crate. I think American is especially paranoid about stuff like this. I know for a fact that several other airlines allow Segs to be checked at the gate with no questions asked.

Hmmmm..... now if Segway dealers would only rent batteries, then it might make travelling with a Segway just a little easier. Just a thought.

Greetings. by now you probably have flown SWAir. I have used their services twice in the past year and I introduced them to Segways. You should have been able to ride your HT down the tarmac right to the planes door if your are handicapped. I have been permitted to do this on both flights and was treated with dignity and great care. The HT was waiting for me when I deplaned. SWAir was terrific. Please let me know how your trip went and your treatment. I have a phone number and a ladys name who I contact and she would be interested in your feedback. SEG-ON SEG-RIGHT JR
