Dan from Mississippi (Zorba9) was up in NH this weekend and was kind enough to let me try out his enhanced traction studded tires. He threw a set on my HT and off I went. They are unbelievable! I took the HT through snow and ice, and there was no slipping at all. I went down a hill that was probably right around 20 degrees, covered in snow with a layer of ice underneath. I went down and stopped halfway… on the ice! These tires are truly amazing. The traction and stopping capabilities are the best I’ve ever seen on the Segway. Here are some pictures and a link to a video of me playing in the snow:

Those tires seem to be perfect for the year round segging you want up there in snow country. You could probably pull a little sled behind you for the kids or firewood.

That's pretty amazing. Are those SNOW studs or OFFROAD studs? I'm assuming that they're the Bruno Wessel (sp?) offroad studs.

BTW, I just rode a few miles home in an almost-blizzard. The p133 HT performed amazingly on the streets and sidewalks. I did have to keep cleaning off my battery display though. I was getting so much snow on it that I couldn't tell how many bars of power I had :)

I'm glad to hear that! Although I dont have to worry about riding my "p" in any snow in South Florida I'm glad that yours is performing very well in the snow, and mine certainly has been exceeding my expectations with almost daily use.
BTW....I've been looking at Park City and Canyons snow conditions and I could easily give up a few days of my warm weather gliding for a few days of down-hill on those snow covered slopes !!

Hi Derek and Steve,Ya those studs are awesome, I don't think I'll do my Seg but I have screw studs on a set of tires for the ATV and several friends that can't wait for ice on our pond to go ice racing flat track style on their bikes, [80 thru 650 cc dirt bikes]. I have made a quite a few laps on borrowed bikes, easy to hit 80 on a 6 acre pond, the traction is unbelivable if you stay on clean ice. If you dont't, you can fall and slide a long ways, but you don't usually fall too hard cuz in a corner you're down with the bars only a foot off the ice.
Don't push a Seg too hard, I ate snow last week. My fault, I was pushing it.

Afterthought: No offense re: the idea, but I don't think pulling anything behind a Seg, especially kids on a rope, is a good idea.

One quick question about studs. The _only_ reason that I would hesitate using them would be the dangerous the could pose to terrain and to legs. If I brushed up against someone, or the studs brushed up against me, would they cut something or someone?

I don't think it's much of an issue, as I _only_ see them really being used in offroad environments. But if I jumped off, I wouldn't want them coming back to bite me :)

I just watched your video, Derek. Good job. You can seriously power-stop with those studs on. That's amazing.

Derek-Great job with our video! I love the "ice-skating rink" music you put in with it!-:) Your set of tires should be delivered by early next week!

Fellow SC members- My first set of Bruno's had 8.5mm snow studs in them, and of course you know about the great results I had with them off-road! I still had plenty of clearance between the top of the stud and the fender-well, so I decided to try 10.5mm studs on my next pair to see if I could get better preformance out of them. I also have a set with 15mm studs and a set with "big-fat" 4-wheeler studs (13mm). Those are the 10.5mm studs that Derek is riding in the video. The Wessels have supplied me with the equipment and studs. I have now been trained by them and will be the only one studding Segway tires for the general public. I will keep a supply of studded tires on hand to ship out as needed. Among other reasons for my being here at Segway HQ is to see if I can get these darn tires for less than $200 apeice! I am pretty sure LLC won't be selling studded tires to us anytime soon (liability reasons). That is why I have established "Off-Roads Adventure LLC" and now employ 2 lawyers and a CPA to take care of my paperwork and finances (one lawyer is a "patent" specialist and I have since found out that nothing I made-up or modified on my M-167C
is "patentable" (?), even being the first one to "spike" the extra-traction tires was'nt applicable). I am going to convert E and I Segways into off-road hunting machines and hope to get them in Cabellas, Bass Pro shops, etc. Obviously anyone could get their own tires from me and build their own off-road machines! My market is geared to the "rich" hunters who can't be bothered with converting Segways themselves. The machines will come with 2 sets of tires so the folks can learn to ride before going into an off-road environment. If anyone remembers, earlier this summer I made a statement about how I'ld like to be a "traveling Segway salesman", well little did I know then that I'ld be doing exactly that!

What are the studded tires like on a dry surface like concrete or aspalt? Can they be used on indoor surfaces?

I don't know that I'd trust the studs on a nice wood floor. I'd say swap the tires if you're going to bring the HT inside (that's what I'd do anyway) As for concrete/asphalt, I rode on my driveway with no problem. No marks were left at all... snow on the other hand... well... we left some very nice tracks ;)

Cabela's did a phot shoot near my buddy's place in Wyoming. I could set you up for a great shooting location if you want it!
