I have to go to Maui for about 8 days in February (to visit my in-laws), and I was wondering if it was worth bringing my p-seg. My father-in-law says there's really nowhere for me to ride it, but I was wondering if anyone else could give me some feedback. We'll be in Kihei. They have a house there. I just thought if I could get out on my own a little... it might be nice. ;)

FedEx is very easy and reliable, and shipping should be easy enough if you kept the original boxes......the only consideration next is the cost.....

I'm actually going to try riding it up to the plane and checking it at the gate. I have a note from my doctor, and a handicap placard. From my correspondence with other members, I've learned that many of the major airlines are willing to allow at-plane checking of the segway for people with disabilities, with advance notice. We're most likely flying ATA. According to the Transit Report I read, they are one of the airlines that make these accomodations. I'm just wondering if I'll have any use for it on the island. I was hoping to escape a few times and go out exploring. Or, if there are any other seggers in the area, I'd love to meet some of you!

Thats even better than shipping FedEx.......make sure you get to the airport early enough , it may take a little extra time for you to get thru security and past certain gate agents not familiar with the Segway. Remember...the batteries are " NON SPILLABLE"...thats important information for stowing the machine on the plane for many air carriers....dont tell them you " dont know for sure" tell them they ARE non-spillable if you are asked (they are afterall ).If they require the battery to be disconnected removing the control shaft and disconnecting the 2 quick disconnects should suffice. Thats all I can recommend....good luck , and have a great trip.

poohbear,
Then by all means take your p-series with you. Don't forget the power cord!
It'll be a great feeling to be out on your own exploring while you're there, so to say. Even if you aren't really on your own (or if you are--that's up to you!)

Kihei is probably the best district on the island for cruising on a seg. Decent sidewalks most of the way on South Kihei road along the ocean and if you head south toward Makena it's a nice scenic ride on the coast thru less populated areas. I heard that the county just recently paved the road all the way to the La Perouse Bay nature preserve past Makena through the lava fields although you might be pushing the range of a P on a round trip from Kihei. The west side might be fun, Lahaina Front Street and the Kaanapali resort but you would need to transport your Seg there by car. Have fun!

the one thing wrong with gate-checking it is what happens from the gate to the gate. they often drop the segway down a ramp, and i would be agrait they wouldnt secure it in the baggage compartment during the fight. Also, the low temp down there might effect the batteries.
Segway, it's the ride of the future!

Hey mauiseg,
Thanks for the info! I'm guessing by your handle you are somewhere on the island. There's no contact info for you, but if you would be interested in meeting up while I'm in Maui, feel free to e-mail.

If planned correctly , and using the handicap tag on the machine, you may be able to store it right in the cabin.....they usually have space set aside for electric wheelchairs....and going to Hawaii will certainly not be a narrow body aircraft. Pooh bear.....see if they can store it right in the passenger cabin...dont let them take it below if you can help it.

Ooh! Thanks, ElectraGlide.
I'll definitely ask about that. I'm so used to flying on Southwest, I never though about the kind of plane we'd be taking to Hawaii.

Whether the Seg is upstairs or down, the biggest problem is that the wheels roll. Scott of LLC told me that he made a wheel stop of two 2 inch PVC tubes connected by fishing line - just the correct length so each tube acts as a stop for each side of the wheel. However, it is stored, neither you nor the airline want it rolling around.
BTW - Your father-in-law I'm guessing hasn't seen you on your Seg yet and thus has no idea how it has changed your life.

LadyBroo and I (from Chicago) got together on Maui with SegwayChat members Ninja (Randy); and KonaSegway (Sam) and his family at the Marriott Outrigger resort in Wailea just a few months ago. We had a wonderful time!

If there's any way to hook up with these guys, they ARE Segway in Hawaii. The first and the best!
Edit: Don't forget Jackie in Honolulu! We didn't get a chance to meet her, but she's been right there with us all along!

poohbear, I'm glad mauiseg chimed in because I know there are seggers on Maui. I wish you were coming to Oahu that way I could go gliding with you and show you all the great spots on this island. As mauiseg and the others said though there are plenty of places for you to glide. I'm biased I know, but Hawaii has to be one of, if not the best place in the world for a Segway. You will have a blast so take it with you...it will be worth it.
Aloha,
Randy
