View Full Version : Riding the HT inside your House?

My wife wants to know if I am the only one who rides a Segway inside the house (especially now that it is cold outside). She doesn't "get it" that sometimes I just like to get on the HT - even if I am not really going anywhere. So the question is, am I weird or what?

Hey Peter,

I ride my HT inside the house at night when I'm thinking through tough problems. Sometimes I get on it and ride around just because I need a break from thinking :)

And of course I often drop into friends' homes and don't get off the few minutes while I'm standing there. Unless, of course, my experienced-rider friends want to ride it around their home. Then I get off :)

I always make sure my tires are clean before I go on indoor floors, BTW. They're usually always clean, but sometimes I've just ridden through mud so I'll ride on the sidewalk for a minute or spin in circles, etc.

I'm always amazed how little dirt Segways track. I mean, shoes and Segway tires will both track in some dirt. But I seem to create a much bigger mess with my shoes than my HT.

And through all of this indoor riding, I still seem to walk as much (or sometimes more) than I did in the pre-Segway days. Dang, I heard this was going to make me fat and lazy. Yet I've gotten some stronger calf and shoulder muscles and haven't gained weight (in fact, it appears that I may have lost a pound or two). How odd. ;)

Chris

P.S.

I do have a friend whose wife didn't want him riding his HT in the home because it might leak oil on the carpet. I asked him if he was sure he bought a Segway!

Well then tell him not to open cans of tuna while he is riding the Segway in his house. Or switch to tuna packed in water instead of tuna packed in oil.

If my apartment was larger I would ride everyday! Last March we had a timeshare in Orlando, I pushed the chairs out of the way and glided about. Like skating segging stimulates the body and brain hence the flashes of insight and feelings of well being.
Watch out for throw rugs that can slip and door knobs that can bang your knuckles.

i dont think that it's weird, just dont get used to riding indoors. It's different in private residences and public stores. I just have one warning: be careful in doorways. when i had first gotten my segway, partly because i needed to charge it indoors and partly because it has no other home, i had my segway indoors and glided indoors. I was close to banging my 5' 8" head many times.

Well, Segwayowner, think of how bad it is when you're 6' 3"! I was riding around the house and smashed my head real good into the door frame. It didn't take me long to learn that gliding was for outdoors in the living room only! =)

When I first got my HT back in March, I followed the rider's guide which said "practice in a safe area away from traffic, sidewalks, pedestrians etc". This turned out to be inside my house. It was great practice to learn manuverability. It's fun carefully negotiating tight little corners and crannies throughout your house. Didn't break anything, scuffed a tire against a doorframe once is all, and like neelix I'm 6'4" or so and definitely need to duck through doorways.

Yes I still do this from time to time especially if it rains a few days in a row.

I usually ride in my office. It's not like a big office building but we have a few rooms and I just have to keep from hitting my head on the spiral staircase.

We had weeks of rain earlier this year and I was getting Segway stir crazy, so I would just hop on and do some 360s' and run around the office. I don't think it's so weird.

If you guys cant stay off of it, and you feel the need to ride it in the house then I guess that is ok.....but when you guys start talking to it, or getting friendly with it, then I think it's time to get some professional help. LOL

Hmmm, so kissing her goodnight is wrong? I mean, yes, she does take up a lot of room in bed, but I don't mind sleeping on my side. ;)

Of course, inside gliding is great! Just watch out for those throw rugs. And I am going to have to paint the trim on the door jams pretty soon, as I have rubbed up against them more than once.

The first glide at home was inside: http://homepage.mac.com/mzokc/segway/PhotoAlbum42.html

I still enjoy a lengthy ride inside on occasion. There is just enough room and the hardwood floors are great. It's quite an obstacle course while zooming round the dining table and then in and out of each of the 5 pocket door openings, all within 10 feet of each other. Three of the openings are off the entry, the other two are between the sitting, living and dining room in an L shape. I enjoy taking different routes that reverse the direction while gliding round and round.

All I can say is, ,, ALL THE TIME.

We have races in our office and it's a great way to make it to the front office. If a person looked around they would see a few mishaps :)

Our house is all mexican tile and is a great place to practice your moves. My wife just thinks it's just another phase I'm going through :) hehe

I've got to show this thread to my wife. And she thinks I'm crazy about my HT. Looks like I have plenty of good company. Now I can come out of the closet-literally!

I was riding the Ht in the house a while back and saw a 18 to 24" rubber ball on the floor left there by one of the children.
I decided that i would be able to bump the ball along and around the living room floor, kinda like a soccer player would.
MISTAKE !!!
The right tire made contact with the ball (which happened to be underinflated and real grippy rubber, the ball that is) and it "bit into" the ball and made the HT come to a screeching halt(screeching noise provided by me) on the right as the left continued forward making a hard right turn. I flew off, landed on my left side and after checking myself out I was ok.
The cutaway on the front and back of the HT fenders is really neat and required to lay the HT down forward of back. But it do make for a sudden stop when coming in contact with something and the tire(s).

I ride in the house. But in my split-level I cannot go very far. I have gave my sister a demo in the house when she had driven up from Kentucky for a visit. It was late and dark outside. She really wanted to try it so her first experience was gliding thru my dining room, living room and kitchen.

Do you actually need to ride your Segway in the house?
