New Boardmembers Consider Segway Ban In S.F.

Scooters Could Be Banned From City Streets

SAN FRANCISCO -- Two brand-new supervisors in San Francisco are set to get an early test of their political leanings Monday, when they are asked to reaffirm a vote to ban the Segway scooter on city sidewalks.

The measure sponsored by Supervisor Chris Daly passed by 8-2 on Nov. 25, but changes on the 11-member legislative body left the ban's future in question if Mayor Willie Brown decided to veto it as expected. It takes eight votes to override a mayoral veto, and one supporter has left the board.

On Dec. 10, Brown-ally Bevan Dufty was elected and sworn in as a supervisor to represent the vacant seat representing the Castro-Noe Valley District. Also elected and quickly sworn in was Fiona Ma, from the Sunset District, a former aide to state Sen. John Burton, whose name has long been linked to Brown's.

Daly and the five others who are co-sponsoring the Segway ban argue that the new electrified platforms are dangerous to children, seniors and the disabled who also must negotiate San Francisco's crowded sidewalks. One week ago, they put off their final vote on the controversial issue, noting that if Brown does exercise his veto power, they want to give themselves the maximum number of meetings to mount an override campaign given the holiday recess.

After Monday's meeting, the next scheduled meeting is Jan. 13.
