...but of course we all know that Segways are much more dangerous ;)

WOW ... that's an expensive recall !!
... from the article - "four injuries, 28 crashes and 169 complaints" out of 652,000 units affected.
Segway - after 6000 units
3 complaints/incidents - .050%Honda - after 652,000 units
4 injuries .0006% - 1/82 of Segway frequency 28 crashes - .0043% - 1/12 of Segway frequency 169 complaints - .0259% - 1/2 of Segway frequencyI LOVE my Segway ... but I would also concede that the Honda is very safe ... for a car.

Indy, while I'm not here to bash the auto industry (although we'd all love to, heh), I'll have to say that there's a wide gap between rolling cars while the vehicle is off and in a parked gear, and with users drawing too much power from nearly-dead batteries. First off, I'd like to know where the four injuries came from - auto mechanics?
Secondly, there's no reason cars shouldn't have less incidents associated with them than a Segway. It just so happens that the Segway seems to have better history of this so far. My concern is that you have automakers putting systems out onto the road that weigh in the thousands of pounds, can travel in excess of a hundred miles per hour, and are virtually designed to break down!
It's interesting how people don't treat these huge auto recalls as any significant issue, with some even ignoring the warnings, whereas as soon as an 83-pound, $5000 Human Transporter's battery dies, the media does everything short of humping its leg. It's an interesting condition when society can accept the failure of a 2-8 passenger, >1000 pound, >100 mph vehicle powered by something quite flammable as a daily occurance - shouldn't these things be noticed at least as "hey look honey, over in the left lane! what a beautiful silver Deathtrap!"
That's my rant for today after realizing that while my Segway might have had its glitches, none have ever put me in harms' way, and LLC jumps on every single bug we've been able to dig up, from the kickstand to the iButton software crash. I paid roughly $5000 for my HT, and it's a beautiful piece of engineering. I've never met a car owner, from the driver of a Ferrari 360 Modena to the guy behind the wheel of a Kia Rio that have had over a few thousand miles, or better yet, have been used for a few months, that haven't had a significant glitch.

Don't get me wrong ... as I said I LOVE my Segway. And I would like nothing more than to be able to replace my car with it. However for me that is not practical. I work more than 20 miles from home, and I live in the 'burbs, where there are unfortunately many areas without sidewalks. I do use it as much as possible and I have been able to replace many short auto trips with the Segway.
OK ... I didn't include a relative danger/severity factor in my earlier discussion. Believe me, I have no intention of defending the auto industry. However if I were choosing a manufacturer to slam regarding safety, I probably wouldn't pick Honda.

Techically, my Acura is a Honda, so far no recalls, but if it strands me for any reason I have an HT in the trunk just in case!

If I was in the market for a car I'd get the Toyota Prius over a Honda. (Acura NSX does not count) I picked up the literature, the Dealer couldnt keep the Prius in stock , and I'm very impressed with what I read! 60 mpg in the city is really something!! Are there any Prius04 owners out there that can give us their opinions ? Perhaps start another thread ?

Opti rant rave and keep on writing. There is nothing more that tickles my funny bone than reading your out takes. I had one on the first civics~~2 gears 1^2 90 MPH~~kicked the windshield out and Indy raced it for miles and miles and miles out in the bushes<><>What happened???

I don't get it, I've had six Hondas and racked up well over a million miles on them if not two. The four still in the family are at 290k, 270k, 140k, and the baby is only 55K (finally got the driving down). Oh, and none are being recalled as they are only recalling cars with automatic transmissions. To be fair, one did have a water pump fail which required a tow and there have been numerous flat tires but then I got similar service from three Dodges and two VWs. Preventative maintainence really works and I'll be glad if my Segway goes 1/5 as far since that would get the cost per mile down rather nicely.

Thats very impressive mileage, I've only once kept a car as high as 60k......and the last two I got rid of right at 50k. My current vehilce has only 5k and should last me a few more years but I sure have an interest in the Prius, perhaps as a second car. One of my sons wants nothing to do with hybrids (sad huh), he wants HP and speed....he'll learn soon when he starts paying the bills. Anyway...sure would like to hear from some Prius04 owners.

Well, let's keep in mind that the reason the recall is so large is because they sell so many cars!
