Good news folks!
Looks like there has been a $500 price drop on the Segway HT i-series! I just checked out Segway of Texas (http://www.segwayoftexas.com/purchase.htm) and they're selling them for $4,495. I called to confirm that it's "official" and it is! :-)

Strong rumor places the pricing around $3000. Personally, that's also the number I've had in my head for quite a while. I've had an HT for over a year now, but since getting divorced have missed the option to go riding with someone else (since Nancy of course kept her Segway). $2995, and I'd be the first to buy a P.

The Segway of Texas website does confirm the new price, as does Sporty's Pilot Shop. NEVrland and Amazon.com still show the old price, though, so I don't know if it's really official. Both $4,500 and $4,950 both seem like good prices for the i-series though.
That said, if you can get an order in at the lower price today, this might be the day for you to buy an HT :)
Has anyone called Segway LLC to find out if the price is "official" across all dealers? I'm guessing that maybe it just hasn't been updated with the other dealers, and that maybe the news of the software update might blur this new price so it isn't really taking effect "officially" today.

Dude, if you buy a video game at $50 when it comes out, then 6 months later you see it in the bargain bin at Comp USA for $20, do you cry "REBATE!"? Of course not. Same deal here.

You should have felt this one coming...
LIFE ISN'T FAIR!
or more appropriately, all's fair in war and business practices, hehe. Buddy, do you honestly ask for a refund from Dell when two weeks later your system is obsolete? How about a free upgrade from 10.0 to 11.0 from Decision One because everybody else is getting it shipped on their units?
You should see my point by now.

That means that the "Good news folks!" from Frank are good only to folks that don't have a Segway yet or that have plans to buy another one. For the rest of us, Segway Owners, these are almost bad news.
I know that this always happen with new technology products but if you bought two Segway HT's, like me, $1000 are a lot of money just to be one of the firsts to own this product. Don't forget that eventually we will sell our machines and that we would obtain less and less money with each price drop.

Guys, we've seen this happen with VCR's, microwaves, computers etc. Mini Coopers are selling for above their list price right now. If you want one you pay the price. If you wait long enough two things might happen, the price might come down and you will drop dead. I believe the first 3 Segways went for about $100,000 each.
Aacini, you should get a big kick by being the first in Mexico City with one...being the 1,000th just isn't the same.

I don't expect $500 back even though I only bought my HT a month ago... butt.... I bought mine straight from Segway but I think I remember on Amazon (when they first started offering the HT) they were guaranteeing the price for a length of time.. don't remember how long.
I would be tickled pink it Segway offered a $500 discount on a new HT for anyone that bought one at the $4995 price.
It sure would help get a second HT.
$4500 - $500 = $4000 it would even be cheaper when the P comes out.

I am glad to see the price drop. It will make it a little more affordable. In time, if the price of the Segway follows that of other electronic devices, the price will drop below $2000, and maybe even lower. Can you imagine the positive impact on the plant if segs cost only $500.

Hey, in the techie business that's normal. I bought a new Apple 12" PowerBook G4 a couple of weeks ago, two days later they came out with a new model with additional speed for the same price. Oh, well.
"Early adopters" always get to have the fun of paying a higher price, but they also get to play with their toys before anyone else...

Hey, Amazon is still showing the $4,950 price tag, but there's also this little tag line:
Availability: This item is not stocked or has been discontinued.
Wha???
Maybe they're doing this in preparation for the new, lower price and/or the addition of the p-series to the "Segway Human Transporter Store' on Amazon...

What other transportation goes down in price? Certainly not a car! One guy at work just paid over 20K for a new Harley.
It was "Sunday" who told me the happy news of the price reduction today in Park City. He enjoyed another great glide on my HT today. With the lower price, the "i" series is looking better all the time.
This should lower insurance rates too!

To become popular, a device has to match perceived value to cash outlay. The magic price point for an idea is not an easy thing to guess. Sticking a wet finger in the breeze is often as accurate as doing a focus group/engineering study/marketing department computation.
So the real question is "What's it worth to you?"
My gut says that the i-series at $2995 crosses under a value barrier. The p-series commensurately would be c. $2,495. But that's just my brain cells reacting to a resonance in people around me added to my own first-hand understanding of the thing under my feet.

I just bought my Segway i on Sep 30th for $5020. I can tell you, I'll be a quite mad if my seller doesn't rebate me $500 in some way. He was anxious to make the sell. Took my out-of-town check without any trepidation! Nasty taste! Still like the Segway though!

I just called my dealer that sold me the Segway on 30 Sep. He promised me that he just heard 1 Oct, but promised me for good will to give me a $500 credit for Segway assessories, even if it comes from his own pocket (which he says by contract it might). Good dealer! Salt Lake City Segway!

A few months ago I would have been upset that the price dropped. I even thought the Fathers day special was not right.
But that was a few months ago.
In 2 days I will have had my Segway for 7 months. Was that worth the $500.00, you bet it was.
I'm having too much fun and have met so many people that it was well worth the $500 to be an early adopter. I look at it this way. May be with the price drop we'll get some more gliders, and the more that are seen on a daily basis, the faster Segway will become the norm.
Go ahead, pluck down your $4450 and join the fun!

Perduejn, Welcome to SegwayChat! and Welcome as a Segway owner. All of us have found the entire organization to exceed our expectations. I paid $5,500 including shipping and Calif. sales taxes. I'm glad that I'll be getting some new riding buddies.
Also, could you imagine getting on an airplane and going nuts because others paid a lower price for the same seat?
Perduejn had a valid point but it is not customary to give price protection to everyone. If your contract didn't include price protection you are most likely out of luck and can only rely on the goodwill of the dealer. It is rare that price protection protects for more than 30 days.

Anyone know if the e-series plans on getting any cheaper as well? Also, why is it a whole $500 (now $1000!) more expensive? Is it just the bags and the e-stand??
Thanks!

I saw one reseller listing the e series at $5450. So it apparently isn't going down in price anytime soon. But I saw an i self balance on a very slight incline yesterday, and I tried to imagine what an e would look like in person. And I would love to ride one, and see if I could get it down my stairs and into my place.
But I've got plenty of time before I'm in a position to buy one. Maybe they'll have another price drop, improved batteries, and other options by that time.

TOOO bad Segway did not come out with the P at $3000 any sooner. I had that money saved up in cash just for Segway about 6 months ago, but unemployment took its toll on THAT savings.

Statmed... you are so right.
Frankly, I don't care at all that the price dropped and I paid "more" for mine 7 months ago! I mean, $500 is NOT pocket change to me or anything and I sure could use that money on all sorts of stuff... but it's not a problem to me. That extra $500 entitled many of us to be considered ground-breakers and ambassadors. For seven months, we have led the way for others -- we are the Christopher Columbuses... we are the ones who set the pace for all to come. Would I pay $500 extra to be a part of something from it's infancy like the Segway? IN A HEARTBEAT! We all knew the Segway would be a big part of our lives when we plunked down that initial money, but we also facilitated this price drop. If we had collectively hesitated and decided to withhold purchasing until "it got cheaper", it would have never gotten to this point. The reason for the price drop is likely because we, the sacrificial lambs, chose to take the plunge, roll the dice, and try something completely NEW in this world. We put the ball in motion, and the reward and benefit will be there not only for our own gratification later on, but for the entirety of the world as the Segway becomes a force to be reckoned with!

Shouldn't this thread be renamed to "$455 Price Drop" since it's not $500... hehe....
Also, if you have a gold, platinum, or black AMEX with extended price protection and you bought within the past six months they'll credit you for the price drop. I called, but since I was stupid and split it between different cards they wouldn't do it. She said "if you would have done the entire purchase on the AMEX I would have given you an instant credit, but I just can't, sorry!"

Sunday, just out of curiosity, I think we've met. Over the summer I was part of a hiking camp for teenagers that spent some time in Park City. I remember that one day we were in a park sitting on the grass and we talked to someone riding by on a segway. I'm sorry to throw in such a pointless post, but I just couldn't help wondering... you wouldn't happen to remember anything like that, would you? Anyway, after that my interest in the segway grew tremendously and, about a month ago, I got a chance to ride one a bit and I have fallen in love.
Thanks!

Nope, wasn't me. Maybe it was Mark Zimmer. He was up in July for a visit. He let me ride it on the trail to my place to see what it would feel like to do a commute with it. It sure is nicer to ride for a distance than just go for a few feet.
Westgate Resorts has a few of them too. It may have been someone associated with that organization. I've also heard there are a few Segways up here, but I haven't run into anyone yet, and there's only little ol' me registered on SC.

Cool, thanks. Do you commute with it, Mark? I was wondering if it would be possible to get one to commute to school, but I'm not sure how much earlier I would have to wake up... ;) Does riding the seg lengthen your commute much? Thanks again, you guys are awesome!

other trips on my seg are

Some day... some day... the price will be in the $2,000 - $3,000 range. I think once an HT can be purchased in that range (i.e. $2,500), you'll see a significant surge in sales. At $4K it's still the "novelty toy" area, but when someone can quickly see the cost savings in using an HT for their daily commutes, there will be a lot of business.
I'm hoping that day is within a year. :)
at $5k it wasn't a "novelty toy" for me. in fact, i'm making $ on this purchase now that it's paid itself off in less than a year. i think it is all based on the value -you- will get out of it. we've already seen a lot of proce drops, used ht for under $3k, etc...
cheers,
pt
