View Full Version : here’s to the crazy ones
here’s to the crazy ones.
the misfits.
the rebels.
the troublemakers.
the round pegs in the square holes.
the ones who see things differently.
they’re not fond of rules.
and they have no respect for the status quo.
you can praise them, disagree with them, quote them,
disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them.
about the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.
because they change things.
they invent. they imagine. they heal.
they explore. they create. they inspire.
they push the human race forward.
maybe they have to be crazy.
how else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art?
or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written?
or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?
we make tools for these kinds of people.
while some see them as the crazy ones,
we see genius.
because the people who are crazy enough to think
they can change the world, are the ones who do.
=============================================
apple did this awhile back and i think about it all the time.
here's to the folks at segway, ya'll are crazy and so are we. and i bet we're all crazy enough to change the world together.
if you've ever seen this apple campaign, it has a lot of pictures of "dorks", crazy ones at that. :-]

I have a downloaded .mpeg version of that ad, and I frequently view it. it is indeed inspiring.

PT, nice post. I liked that campaign too. In fact, as I recall, one of the creative people featured in the ad was Bob Dylan, another great American hero who I'm convinced is genetically linked to Dean Kamen.
Dylan: "Ya better start swimmin' or ya'll sink like a stone"
Kamen: "Life is short, work hard"

Yep, here's to them.
All of these attributes are great if you are a throwing pottery in a barn in Vermont.
However, if you try to apply them to a company that makes computers you end up with a 17% market share.

This Reminds me of a poem I wrote when I was in Jazz Band in school. I was kicked out after two semesters of playing guitar because I couldn’t read music , I could only see it.
Small is the word that comes from the crazy man
For the words that I speak are insignificant
And large are the eyes of the hungry child
An so this the mind of the crazy man
Words are not heard, these unlike the actions
Lessons come hard to the unconcerned
So cast your eyes upon this now
A sea that is sky blue
Close your eyes and dream my friends
I'll see ya

In my senior year I pettioned the entire senior class for a live band at the prom. Went before the student council and my band played the prom.
We opened in with a classic from Led Zeppelin

peace is a oneway street, with no crossroads and no deadends

-who has the largest share market share with mp3 player?
-who has the most sucessful music download service?
17% marketshare is great, over 70% marketshare when it comes to the creative market.
but hey, maybe they should make pottery.

I would love for Apple and the like to have more market share, and all that (I certainly won't use Windoze in my personal life) BUT, there is something to be had for a niche market, and brand loyalty, to be a part of a small, select, enlightented crowd. It's special.
I think Apple will live on, often imitated, never duplicated, and so will Segway, in part by people like us, special, enlightened... crazy!

The fact is Apple is alive because of Microsoft. Apple has barely 5% market share for computers. They are still alive only because of Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop.
I prefer the PC world because you don't have to be locked in with a single company/manufacturer. Not very egalitarian imo.
I hope Segway does not emulate Apple. That's a dead end approach imo. If you want 5% market share of the market then emulating apple is fine but I think segway wants to be more than a niche market.

It's an interesting comparison, but you know.. 5% of the transportation market would be phenomenal :-)

Version for Poindexter:
here's to the normal ones.
the conformists.
the sheep.
the milquetoasts.
the round pegs in the round holes.
the ones who see things the same as everyone else.
they're very fond of rules.
and they have every respect for the status quo.
you can praise them mildly, slightly disagree with them, watch them quote others in power-point presentations,
shrug at them, or go with them for the time being.
but the easiest thing to do is ignore them.
because they never change themselves or the world around them.
they naysay. they harrumph. they bore.
they waste space. they waste time. they waste their lives.
they drag the human race down.
maybe they have to be boring.
how else can you stare at an empty canvas and not be moved to create?
or sit in silence and never write your own song?
or gaze at a red planet and wonder why we waste taxpayer money learning anything new?
we make tools for these kinds of people.
while some see them as the boring ones,
we see a market.
because the people who are boring enough to think the world is just fine as it is, thank you very much, are the ones who buy our products.
Windows.

Bruce, you rock man!
But could you edit the taxpayer money part? It is just as immoral to use the government to confiscate wealth from people than directly sticking a gun in their face oneself. Research should be privately funded, like the development of the Segway was.
It all starts with Life, Liberty, and Property or nobody does anything at all.
That said, your poem is a classic! No kidding, wonderful.

pt, thanks for reminding me of this piece! I downloaded it a while back, and it makes for an incredible inspiration - one of the things that I've found to get me actually working. It's so true though, and it's an excellent piece of art as much a message and advert.
Perhaps we're all a bit idealist at heart - it's a lesson that should be learned early in life that idealism is a healthy thing if you choose to help form the world around you into that ideal, and not let the opportunity pass you by.

Here’s a couple for Bruce:
Here’s to the ones who like to think they are crazy.
The self professed misfits.
The rebels without a clue.
The troublemakers that don’t like when other people make trouble.
The people that see themselves as any kind of peg when they are really a kind of hole.
The ones who see things differently because they are blind.
They can’t follow rules but they want you to follow rules.
They have no respect the status quo but they want you to respect the status quo.
You can’t criticize them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them or be subject to accusations of conservatism.
About the only thing you can do is ignore them.
Because they change nothing.
They imitate. They navel gaze. They make you sick.
They stay home. They create prosaic crap. They depress.
They push the human race backward.
Maybe they have to think they are crazy so they can feel “special”.
They think you can just stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels.
They act like doing any of those things requires mental instability.
They have a romantic notion of creativity that comes from never having been creative.
They can’t make tools for anyone because they are institutionalized
While they see themselves as the crazy ones, we see tired boring anachronisms.
Because the people who are crazy live in their private little world of their own creation throwing pottery in Vermont.
Here’s to the sane.
The one’s that get along with others.
The citizens.
The law abiding.
The one’s that don’t judge people as pegs or their place in the world as a hole.
The one’s who recognize we are all individuals.
They play by the rules.
They have respect for themselves and others.
You can say anything you want about them.
Ignore them if you want. They don’t care.
They advance society.
They am what they am and that’s all that they am.
They have nuclear families.
They advance the human race.
They are realist.
They create, purchase and appreciate all of the arts.
They are scientist.
They don’t have to be “crazy” to be special.
They use tools.
They think the people who think they are crazy really are just ignorant.
Crazy people change the world, for the worse.
Who changed the world more? Bill Gates or Steve Jobs?

Well I guess that makes me the most creative.
That old golden rule was written by a bunch of dead white men.
Down with the rules! No rules rule!
Me so crazy! I should go work for Apple. But then they probably have some "rule" about having to show up and work before being paid.
Damn the corporate pigs at Apple.
