A few weeks ago SegwayChat members SegwayBill and ISeg visited NH. They took time to ride with SEG-NH. Before they left, SegwayBill extended an invititation to join him in the Greenwich Village Halloween parade. http://www.halloween-nyc.com/
Wait a second- Greenwich Village, Halloween night, in a wild costume, on a Segway? I don't know about the rest of you folks, but I don't think I could live with myself if I missed this.
As a diversion from the more serious discussions here, I'm conducting a survey for costume ideas that include a Segway. One concept is to have a costume that covers the machine in such a way as to leave the general public guessing as to how you are moving so smoothly. Another concept is to dress up the Seg itself as part of the costume. Please add your ideas to this thread- and don't be afraid to let your imagination run riot.
Here are some ideas to get things started:
The Illuminated Ghost: A ghost costume that completely covers and surrounds the Seg- it would feature whispy threads, spider webs and be illuminated from the inside with ghoulish flourescent lighting. As it silently swept down dark alleys it would scare the bejeezuz out of unwitting mortals. The un-dead would merely double over in laughter.
The Grim Reaper: At almost 7 feet tall, this curb jumping menace would get noticed. The oversized sickle would have to be made of rubber or else the Department of Homeland Security would shoot on sight. His giant burlap cloak would surround the entire Segway, leaving bystanders wondering how exactly is it that death is able to move so silently.
The Beer Can: This giant cylinder would be an over-sized replica of an aluminum can- except it would have a head sticking out the top. Alternately, it could be a beer bottle and the rider would wear a giant bottle-cap for a hat.
Captain Kirk: This costume wouldn't cover the Seg. Instead, the rider would wear a StarTrek costume and also customize the plainly visible machine. The entire Segway could be plated with that "glow in the dark" plastic sheeting. That, and a dozen GL lights on each wheel would give a nice futuristic look. And Kirk could have a toy light saber. (wait- nevermind, wrong movie)
Your ideas and comments please.
"I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell"
i like the kirk idea, the beer can and death aren't that fun to think about with a segway. i might get a big-ole victorian dress and glide around or dress up like a bad-a55 harley dude :-]

Someone else mentioned Grim reaper to me, so you stole my thunder.
Other option would be an alien complete with green makeup and antenna

How about a Roman toga outfit and a Segway decorated to look like a chariot? Nah, that'll never work...

The theme of this years parade is the trickster, winged Hermes or Mercury. Perhaps a winged Segway with a winged helmet.

I've been telling the Chicago people for a few months that on Halloween I was going to go around as a Ghost wearing a sheet down to the wheels being careful to construct something to keep the sheet away from the wheels. From a distance going about 8 mph I would scare the kids to death; or am I the kid? Anyway you get the picture.

A hula hoop on the bottom? <G> I'm not sure how to keep something away from the wheels if it's in front of them and down to the ground. Makes me a little nervous. Makes me think of Isadora Duncan.

Harry Potter - Hey muggles, convert the shaft of your HT into a broom by attaching a bundle of straw at its base. Then slap a Hogwarts crest on a blazer and go as a quidditch player. Round glasses, optional.

Captain Kirk gets my vote. Also, I would consider George Jetson. Or maybe get a Seg Carriier tray attached to the front, with dry ice in water to create a fog. Then dress like a ghost. That would look cool.
But my all time favorite idea that I want to do, is dress like one of the people from Dark City. If you haven't seen it, go rent it.

dhugger (and all others),
I think it would be great to dress up as Rosey's boyfriend (Rosey the robot, jetsons, like dhugger mentioned). I'm not a girl maid, so I'd need to be the guy.
He showed up in Jetsons Episode #8 (1/11/1962); does anyone know where I could find a picture of him? :) :) :)

Has anyone thought of a way to attach wings to HT? I went to the store today and saw some feather angel wings but I am not sure how to attach them to the fenders.

I've been thinking about copying clm's Roman Chariot idea for a while now... and now I've done it! Not as nice and "real" looking as Chris's, but it'll do the job!:D

Those images are of "Uniblab", who went to work with George at the office, much to George's chagrin. They got him fired by rewiring him to say "Spacely's a stoop!" in front of the boss. He had a propensity for playing Planet Poker and Jupiter Gin when the boss wasn't around.
I can't find an image of Rosie's boyfriend. I can't even remember his name or what color he was. He looked much more similar to Rosie than Uniblab does, same proportions and structure but I think with square-er elements, i.e. his head was a box compared to Rosie's which was a cylinder.
All I really remember is Rosie's interpretation of Judy's love life from the beginning of that episode. "This is miss Judy in love! This is Miss Judy OUT of love!" Classic.
If I can make it to the parade my costume will most likely be something easy like "dipping chicken" or "dunking chicken" or whatever it was that reporter said we look like naturally. I don't think I'll be able to dress up, so I'll just be "Person on Segway" as my costume, unless I can whip up something quickly.
What I would LIKE to do is get a battle droid costume (Star Wars Episode I) and then ride the Segway as if it were my S.T.A.P.

As the great Andrew Martin said, "One was glad to be of service." You'll have to post pics of your costume Fred. I guess I'll just go as a serial killer again this year: It's always the normal looking people that turn out to be the real monsters:)

The chariot is made out of a single 4'x8' sheet of cardboard that I bought at a cardboard box store for $5.
I first folded the cardboard roughly at thirds (1/3) so that the first and last thirds are the sides, and the middle third is the front.
I "crumpled" the middle third so that I could curve the front part and fit the side panels roughly to the wheel wells. I eyeballed the placement, took a marker, and drew the cutout and the wheel well placement. I jigsawed the panel.
With the remaining cardboard, I made two cross-ribs to hold the curved shape of the front, and additional pieces to hold the sidewalls to the wheel well. Lots and lots of tape in use here.
I took a straightened coat hanger cut to the same length as the width of the front panel and used it to make a curved ruler to mark the curve profile to cut out the cross-ribbing. Also, the cross-ribbing was made deliberately oversized so that I could notch it where it sits against the control shaft (minimize side-to-side swaying).
BTW, I made it easier to attach the cross-ribbing by first taping a heavy-duty trash bag to the front panel, then curling the front panel around the ribs, and then retaping everything to fit tightly against the rib. Trying to tape directly from rib to front curve might be tricky unless you have assistants.
I then used lots of tempra paint to decorate.
The one thing I need to do now is to get some duct tape or something more sticky than regular packing tape. It's sort of coming apart now.
The front part is tied into place with strings and velcro straps, and taped to the fenders.
If I were to do it again, I would make not cut out the wheel well completely. Instead, I'd make flaps so that I could tape the sidewall directly to the fenders, instead of to the cardboard attachment points (which aren't holding as well as I'd like). The cardboard warped after painting and I'm now having to reinforce it...
It took about 3 hours to construct -- mostly because I was sort of eyeballing it and trying to think of how to make the front curved part hold its shape. If I had to do it again, it'd probably take me 30 minutes. Painting took another 90 minutes.
Oh, and I now need to get two more pieces of cardboard to cover the wheels to match the look...

To be or not to be Caesar or Batman? That is the question!
Thanks, Joe for sharing...I'll be filing a patent on this tomorrow.

It seems to me that the only Halloween costume for New Hampshire would be Icabod Crane holding his head in his arm.

I dressed up like a witch complete with hat and cape. I then tied a broom onto my Segway (with the help of the upper cargo frame) and rode around on my "broom". It was really fun and I got a lot of looks. The people at the hospital where I work loved it.
