I suppose you can go on a newspaper delivery route. If you live in the right neighborhood, you might be able to make a good chunk of money on the Christmas tips... But, really, for an 11 year-old, I think it'd be tough to come up with an economic justification that would appeal to your parents... houstonseg, I think your enthusiasm is terrific; but the Segway's price and power makes it unsuitable for a young person to use unsupervised...

You can use the Segway to deliver newspapers. There's an idea to pay for it off in 20 years. :)

Perhaps you might try talking your parents into buying 1 Segway for use by your entire family. Each family member can begin to integrate the seg into their daily lives, both for pleasure glides and for practial alternatives to using an automobile for 4-6 mile trips. By the time you are 16 and your mom is having to drive you all over town for this school event and that, the seg will begin to look a lot more practical to her. But for now, use your bike as much as possible and avoid developing a dependance on a car (and your parents) to get you places. It is much easier to develop good transportation habits when you are young than it is to learn new habits when you are older (like me).
ps.....
I am impressed with your enthusiasm for the Segway........maybe you shoud just write Dean K. a letter and ask him for a free one.

When I was that age my mom would send me to the grocery store on my bike sometimes several times a day. Four blocks away. Maybe you could pick-up and deliver groceries for the elderly for a tip/fee or whatever. Pizza delivery comes to mind, this would only work in limited local proximity of the pizza parlor. Delivery of newspapers is good, if your route is big enough. My older brother used to deliver two star routes with Sunday papers. He had two of those big yellow carts hooked to each other and pulled them on a bicycle.
Back when I was a kid we used to get milk delivered in glass jugs and dropped off in a box on our porch. That was before they got the idea to sell it to grocery chain stores. We even used to get Charlie Chips (potato chips) delivered to our door. Sell ice cream with a cart attached to a Segway. Somebody STOP me.... hehe

Save your money (and your parents' money) and invest for your future. When you turn 16 you'll inevitably want a car. Better yet, use it for college. There is likely very little that's constructive to do with a $5000 Segway as a young teen or preteen. Even if you live close enough to school to ride it in, your school might not let you ride it inside... and then you force the school to come up with a storage solution for you to keep it safe while you're in class.
You'll be a terrific target for a bigger kid (17? 22? 40??) to come up, knock you off and then ride off on your seg. Sure, you'll still likely have the keys, but you really will be an easy target. Also, you're likely to just be screwing around and hotdogging for your friends (be honest!) and will be primed to hurt yourself, someone else, the segway and perhaps even the segway name.
And if you have to add "but I'm a lot older!" - you're still too young. Most of the adults here probably heard it when we were younger... and we denied it. It's only through time and experience that you find out how little you really knew way back when you thought you knew it all. ;)
Just my two cents.

Nothing personal and no offense intended.

plus the fact that you can't be trained until you're 16
as for usefulness, it's only good if you don't drive. or live in an area w/ no snow.

Uses for a Segway ------
Now of course a thing can have dozens of uses even if Xavier himself isn't, at the moment, in a position to take immediate advantage. So here goes:
Airport parking lots should stock them, so you wouldn't have to walk miles to your car carrying luggage. A bus + driver circulating the parking lot every ten minutes is probably more expensive than a modest fleet of Segway vehicles.
Security staff at airports already use Segways. Those folks walk around a lot, and the 8" they gain in height, and the increased speed, all help them.
Managers at Home Depot ought to ride Segways. They have a lot of territory to cover, staff to supervise, customers to help.
Elementary-school principals need Segways, for the same reason.
In cities, the guys who you call if you lock yourself out of your car -- they ought to travel on Segways, because it's faster during rush hour than being stuck in a truck.
Parking-enforcement people in cities could likewise cover the distance more conveniently on a Segway.
School-teachers, lawyers and librarians who live near their work, could commute on a Segway, and save thousands of dollars compared with keeping a car.
Trained apes at the circus could ride Segways. (But of course there is a weight limit on the present models.) And a new type of tightrope performance (with two tight-ropes) could be attempted.
Tourists should be able to rent a Segway for a day in Tampa, Charleston SC, Toronto, (Des Moines?), etc., to see more sights with less of a hassle with rental cars, taxi cabs and the like.
Rangers at nature parks could use Segways to make more tours of their paths than they can do walking. They could hop off the Segway and lean it against a tree when they saw an interesting plant that needed measuring, or whatever.
The Pentagon is the world's biggest office building, and has long hallways. Perhaps they could keep a fleet of Segways, to save folks walking-time inside the building.

xavier, I have wanted a segway ever since I first saw it on gma. That was a few months ago, and since then have had tons of time to think about ways to make the money and ways that I would use it. I had finialy decided to begin my 'seg conquest' to fund buying the machine.
Right now im 15 (just turned) and it will probably take a year or so to gather the 5k. (Im not beggin my parents to buy me it, nor would they ever do so lol) But I finialy followed the advice many sc members have posted before. That is to sit down a write a list of things that you would use it for. If you plan on gliding to school, find out first if its allright. I happen to be great friends with many teachers and subschool prin.'s and they have allready offered to allow me to glide to school and store it away in a back room.
Anyway, I guess my point is this. Because you are 11, you will probably be depending on support from your parents to help pay for it. But maybe money is not a problem for you guys. In that case look at the list you wrote. If you cant get more then a few ideas down, then its more of an expensive toy.
Ohh well, its up to you.

Get your mom or dad to try a Segway. They will be hooked and buy at least one, then you can use it all the time!

Going from south campus to north campus at UMass Lowell around 5PM. It's 45 minutes by car, 30 minutes on foot and about 7 on a Seg.
