View Full Version : what videos would you like to see?
ya'll are hungry for new videos, so here's your chance to give me some ideas.
what types of video would you like to see of the segway ht?
-right now i have one of some friends learning to ride through cones.
this weekend we might shoot a "segway ht view" of my commute with a special camera mount amongst other cool things.
what types of actions and things would you like to see?
i officially nominate "weskifm" for the titles of the videos, next one will be "enjoy the glide" if he's cool with that :-]
cheers,

pt, since some people (particularly at TIQ) are still clamouring for evidence of Segway's safety, how about conducting some simulated Segway crashes? Segway has been, thus far, lacking in releasing hard data about how safe their machines are. It would be a great help to them and us if u could give us a clearer picture. We would also be more interested in how Segways do on slippery surfaces and on rough terrain. Show us how Segways manage going up and down curbs. I dont mean to be difficult, but I do think this sort of data would be of great help to aliviate the concerns of those worried about Segway safety.
-curbs, fine, no problem will do.
-various terrain, no problem will do.
-crashes, not going to entertain that at this time, would be a bad idea i think :-]
cheers,
pt

How about the reaction of pedestrians and motorists to seeing a Segway in action. Gauge peoples curiosity and support? Would they use one? When you go over a curb, have a ruler next to the curb to measure it's depth. Some planners and engineer types might be interested.

-Steep Grades and Falls (safe though)
-Knowing how much to adjust the handel for someone.
-Different key comparisons (shows turning, moving, and other things on each key)
-Other cool things

Get some close up shots of the Segway in action.

pt, very cool of you to make this offer. i'll ditto all that has been said; pretty much any of the video clips mentioned above would be great, especially some of the stuff not often seen (like the curb tests, reactions by others, etc). ...but your clips are always great, we're hungry for more video and it's all delicious :-) so whatever it is that comes next I'm looking forward to it.

A video showing the transition from top speed to an arbitrarily signalled quick stop (maybe as simple as someone calling out) would be something many people would be interested in seeing. Perhaps filmed from the side at med. distance.
Just want to say again, your site is great, and the videos so far are first rate. Thanks again for sharing the experience.

PT,
I'd like to see what the Segway looks like while traveling on an urban sidewalk among pedestrians. How do the pedestrians react? How fast can the Segwayist go?
I'd also like to see how traffic interacts on the roadway portion of a street. How fast can the Segwayist go? How comfortably do drivers pass?
Video might provide a better communication of these interactions than can a verbal description or still photo.

the speed for a sidewalk venture for a properly trained owner should be at a pedestrian pace (1-2 mph).
i would need to get permission to post video like that, and in some cases when it's not needed, the fact a camera is around will change behaviors. i'll see what i can do. so far, people don't seem to even notice, or they stop and talk to me.
[quote]quote:Originally posted by bicycledriverI'd also like to see how traffic interacts on the roadway portion of a street. How fast can the Segwayist go? How comfortably do drivers pass?
on open road, the segway can go up to 12.5mph, cars pass me the same as they do with all the bikes around here. if it's possible, i'll see what type of footage is doable.

However... it did cross my mind to wonder what it might be like to make love on a Segway. With one or both individuals on a Segway. I imagine a short lady with a tall partner would be ideal.
If pt and his lady decided to describe such a personal experiment it would surely be a "world exclusive".

pt, Daddy 4Seg (my dad) has a vid clip for you. How about stopping on an uphill, getting off. Then restarting and taking off. Do you have to stop on a flat surface? How would it work on a golf course? Can you illustrate a quick mount-dismount? (I do not think it is very possible with novices)

Similar to 4Seg, I'd like to see a video of someone turning around 180 and 360 on an incline. Seems like it would require the user to make a lot of adjustments.

I just read that the HT calibrates what driving straight is when you start it. I think it would be interesting to start the HT with the handle grip turned slightly, then ride hands-free in a circle. Just curiosity.

PT - I'd really like to know how the HT performs on wet, slippery pavement. Do the fenders keep your pants from getting splashed? Is it easy to clean off the mud with a hose?
I'd love to see more videos - good ideas above.

I'm not sure I get what you mean. But I do know that the Seg is not going to turn continuously unless you continue to hold th turning collar. When you let go it returns to what I would call top dead center.

i ride in on wet slippery pavement all the time, it's not been a problem at all. the fenders so a great job keeping me dry.
i've hosed the segway down before, but most of the time i just leave it to dry.

The follow mode sounds interesting to me too, as well as maneuvering on hills and peoples various reactions.
Also, post a video of its secret hovering capabilites so I can sell it to Spliff.

weskifm, this is just something I read from the Segway site about it (rarely) driving off kilter. Why not give it a try? Twist the grip away from its default, then turn the unit on. From what I read, it figures what dead center is at startup, which means if this "works" it will also reset upon the next startup. Just for kicks and grins. I've got to think of something to pass the time until I'm gliding with the rest of you.

And I would liket to see a video of use on a crowded sidewalk, if possible.
A "Walking the dog" video would be nice. Finding some solutions to walking big dogs while riding a Segway could also be lucrative.
i will never create a walking the dog video, that's cruel and dangerous.
that's just my opinion.

That answers one question, thanks. Could u explain in more detail? I dont mean on sidewalks where the leash can get tangled up, but in an open field of grass or a dirt path where there would be no danger of entanglement.
animals are unpredictable, most vets and responsible pet owners would agree that pets should not be tethered in any way to a moving car, bike or a segway ht even it's grass, dirt or an open field.
i like my dog, we for walks-- using a segway ht for dog walking would go against all my principals of why i bought a ht. using a ht gives me -more- time to walk the dog (with my feet) since i'm not sitting in traffic or looking for parking.
cheers,
pt

Good Lord, this dog-walking thing....I live in amsterdam. You not only see people walking (jogging, actually) their dogs routinely while riding a bike, but doing so in heavy bike/car traffic on very short leads. But then, you also see parents with up to three full-up kiddie seats their bike, and groceries- never helmets. The dogs are smart. So are the people. No doubt there are accidents (haven't seen any), but it seems, for a great many people, worth the risk. That is life.
Having said that, I myself wiped out in my youth with my bike, dog, and shoulder bags for my paper route. That dog was easily distracted
The dog was fine, I was mangled.
I think I would rather segway with a dog than bike with a dog, but the wheel vs. paw thing would definitely need to be watched.
The idea of a dog-walking business relying on Segways....seems like a recipe for disaster.

Perhaps if the dog has his own Segway....

12-19-2002, 07:16 PM
I think you COULD ride with the dog. You would actually have a good ability to pull the dog back if they pulled away.
But it would not be safe. One pull to the side and you're off the segway, or it's up on one wheel. Best to actually Walk the dog.
