View Full Version : Dilemma Solved! Brought One Home Today

I’ve been struggling for the past couple of days regarding the choice between immediate purchase vs. delay in hopes of a price drop. I saw a brief window of opportunity when a lower price was …briefly… posted on a dealer’s web site yesterday. It was quickly switched back to the regular price of $4950 within a couple of hours.

Anyway, I’m happy to report that we brought home a brand new “i” model HT. We did the training today at Sporty’s near Cincinnati. It was a great experience. We were able to train in their warehouse facility, and the trainer from Sporty’s couldn’t have been more helpful and thorough. We carted home our new HT, and I’m enduring the SegWait right now during the initial charge.

I can’t say enough nice things about my experience with Sporty’s. I’ve made many purchases from them for aviation related items over the years. For those of you who may be pilots and members of AOPA (Airplane Owners and Pilots Association), if you have one of the AOPA MasterCard or Visa cards, Sporty’s gives and additional 5% discount for ALL purchases made at Sporty’s (even Segways) when you use this card.. And yes, the “i” HT will fit into a small plane. The 5% discount with the AOPA credit card will more than offset the delivery charge (if you order it to be shipped), or almost offset the sales tax (if you pick it up there). OK, so much for delayed gratification. I had to take it home with me. And in addition, each purchase from Sporty’s enters you into a sweepstakes to win a new Cessna 172. They give an airplane away each summer.

My HT looks like an example of very recent vintage. The factory sticker on the box has a date of (I assume) 8-20 (on the label is a section of small boxes number 1-12; box number 8 has a 20 stamped in it). I don’t know if this is manufacture or shipping, but it’s new enough for me.

Tomorrow will be a busy day. I can’t wait to start learning in real world conditions. Thanks to everyone for their input so far. It really is great to have an on-line community like this to share questions and experiences. I’m sorry I arrived too late to participate in Segway Fest, but then again, there’s always next year!

I’ve learned so much in reading the forums, but now the real-world learning begins. I’ve proudly switched by profile to list “Segway Owner”. I just need the experience necessary to call myself a Segway Glider!

Congrats Bob!

Condition those batteries and take it slow and easy the first few days, and you'll be a pro. Don't feel like you have to give anyone a demo ride until you're comfortable with the machine yourself. Bend the knees and lean into those turns, for a nice smooth glide.

You'll see what we mean ... enjoy!

Bob,

Glad you could purchase and be trained so quickly. That discount is great news too.

Take your time and enjoy the black key until you are tired of hitting speed limiter all the time. Advance to yellow and then red only when you feel it is necessary. I wore some extra protection at first and continue to wear the helmet. Eye protection is necessary if you have low hanging branches where you glide.

Above all, have fun. I enjoy the HT more now than ever before, especially when I slow down for bumps in the road.

I say to people that a helmet should ALWAYS be worn when you are traveling in anything open above waling pace. It's not so much you falling off, but an event out of your control taking place, like a car or bike knocking you off. If you're gliding out in a public place its also recommended to get some reflective gear, I have a bright yellow sash which makes me very visible and just slips over whatever I am wearing.

Finally, seriously look at insurance. for you hurting yourself, someone else or causing an accident and of course theft. Just do a search above on Insurance and you'll get a list of contacts.

What's needed is a Segway new owners guide, rather than just the manual which offers after market advice, maybe something segway chat can come up with?

Congratulation BobC , I'm sure you will enjoy your purchase for a long time to come! When I heard that there was a local dealer in my area I did the same thing....dropped in, received a demo, then I told him I would go home and think about it. Well, I never got out the door....I stood there for a moment, turned around and said " Think about what? I know I want it....get one and put it in my car! " ( the instant gratification thing )
Today I'm driving Segway number 2.....a new "p" that was delivered just in time for the SegFest. I sold #1 a few weeks ago and will shortly replace it with another new "i" . (I can live without my plane, but dont take my Seg away ! )
