I learned that the speed limiter begins to tip you rearward long before you are traveling 12.5 mph. What I would love to know is just what this curve looks like.

At what speed does the limiter begin to engage?
Just how much does a pilot have to lean to get the full 12.5?

Could one of you industrious types gather this data? I guess you would need a bike computer/speedometer and I-don't-know-what to measure the tilt. The result would be a graph of platform tilt vs speed.

Any volunteers?

Chris

i beleive that the speed limiter kicks in at about 10 mph, not positive though

is ne1 able to verify or discredit this?

Yeah, I recall a question about the speed limiter coming up at the panel discussion at Segway Fest, and one tidbit of information is that it starts tilting you back 2 mph before you max out.

Fear not, for even though I come from the Forbidden City, I surely do not agree with the rules.

Yes I remember them saying it kicks in at 10 mph at Segfest, but I am wondering does that mean the P kicks in at 8 mph?

it would make sense to but ...
i suppose we should find out from some authority, or actually test it.

I've used an Avocet Cyclometer for a couple of months; seems to be very accurate (has 10 wheel magnets). I think 12.5mph is an honest top crusing speed for the Seg. ABOVE that speed limiter starts kicking in. It's not hard to cruise at 13.5 or 14mph, but a bit uncomfortable with the platform tilting back (and of course it's getting low "gas" mileage doing that).

With my GPS the speed limiter starts in a 10.0 mph and I can't get it any faster then 12.4 mph.

I pulled out my GPS the other day because the 12.5 mph didn't feel like it to me. I was surprised to see that I was doing between 12.1 and 12.3 mph consistently (I'm a pretty big guy). I didn't really notice when the speed limiter was kicking in but I'd guess it was around 10 mph.

Are you sure that you have the right sized wheel dialed in?

The Segway tire outside diameter is 19".

I cannot cruise any faster than about 12.3 or so, certainly I cannot cruise at 13 or higher. I have a bike computer set for a wheel circumfrence of 151 cm. In comparisons with my GPS it is spot on.

I have seen speeds of nearly 14 mph but only for a second after bumping against the speed limiter.

I begin to notice the speed limiter shortly after reaching 10 mph.

as i remember from code named ginger, the speed limiter should kick in at about 12. then in orrder to slow down, it needs to get ahead of you (by going a little faster).

it doesnt speed up to slow down, i beleive it speeds up to offset the balance which tilts the handle bars back (the speed limiter)
its something like that

The speed limiter design was described to us at SegwayFest -- it's rather ingenious!

The Segway accelerates/decelerates the same no matter what speed setting you have (it has to -- otherwise, you would hurt yourself). There's no special code for the speed limiter to "shoot forward".

Instead, one of the dynamic stabilization parameter is the desired platform angle. Normally, the parameter is set to keep the platform level. As you approach the speed limiter value, the software dials up the desired platform angle to cause the stabilization system to balance you with increased angle and thus creating a stick push back.

I remember it described the same as toybuiler!

What then, is the top possible speed of the Segway? Without larger wheels fitted and if there were no speed limitations imposed. Not that I would want to go any faster, 12.5mph is quite fast enough thanks! :)

If you were to go at 12.5 mph and then hit a bump causing the Segway to "trip", it will accelerate like mad to catch you. I know it goes at least 14 mph (just by me "throwing" myself forward), and I suspect even more is possible under the trip scenario. In past discussions, I've heard it said that the motors can work up to 18 mph. (At which point there is no more safety margin left.)

All this overspeed condition is, of course, very temporary. It does it enough to bring you back into control at 12.5 mph (or less).

Watching a person trip at full speed is quite a sight! (Hi Peter!)

My bike computer is set for 58.78in (149cm) which is the rolling wheel circumference measured on the floor. I can feel the speed limiter at 10mph only when travellling slightly downhill, otherwise I don't feel it before 12.5mph on level ground. It's not too difficult to momentarily surge up to 15.0mph (wouldn't want to try to maintain that, though).
