Some battery use issues are still not clear. Apparently we should plug the unit in and leave it plugged in when not in use, but don't plug it in for 2-3 hrs. after using and don't "top it off" -- is this correct?

Also, every 10 or so uses we should discharge all the way to red, but not completely shut down. I find myself using the HT for short glides, so if it takes two or three days to get the batteries down, so don't recharge in-between?

I appreciate any recommendations in this area. 2

I think you've understood it correctly. I'm not nuts about the "fully discharging" part; I want it full as often as possible!

I guess part of the message is "Don't fear the red face."

I'm not sure, but I assume that taking it down to the bottom bar, or bottom bar flashing, is probably close enough--for practical purposes--to be considered a full discharge.

Segway engineers mentioned to stop using the Segway when you get the red indication. Many of us have pushed it awhile and then climb back on, repeating the process until every last amp is drained. That can cut battery life dramatically. When it's red, it's time to get off and stay off until it's charged up again.

I think they meant that doing a refreshing but life-limiting "Double" charge required a lengthy period between plug-ins for best effect. Otherwise, when you can stop and charge, just do it. If the batteries are not cooled down before charging, less refill will happen, but no damage.

This is what Amazon.com says about charging the Segway battery.

"The internal electronics in the battery incorporate "smart" charging--the customer need only plug the Segway HT into the wall and the battery will choose the appropriate charge rate based on temperature, voltage, and level of charge. The batteries will quick charge, then automatically transition into a balance and maintenance charge mode. The Segway HT customer does not need to worry about memory or timing their charges--just plug it in."

What was suggested to me in Atlanta was that I go ahead and discharge the batteries and recharge. Mind you, I've had mine now since December. I rode it around until I was down ot one bar, and then leaned it up against a counter in balance mode and it ran out during the night. I then plugged it back in and recharged it during the next day. The Segway engineer recommended that I do this occasionally - not often - but I think the paperwork I picked up after the battery seminar said after every 20 cycles or so.

Sid, I'd keep in mind that Amazon.com's information was from prior to last November when it was released on Amazon. They've got almost another year's worth of experience on the battery now, so I'm guessing what we got at SegFest is probably pretty current. I know that they have been gathering information all along - in April, when I went to a training in Orlando, Linda asked me about my battery and usage.
