The owners thread doesn't indicate it, but I also assumed he and his wife(?) each have a Segway-HT. I noticed that in the photo of the Fedex truck there was another big box that looked identical to the one the Segway-HT was shipped in...
Also, don't we see two Segway-HTs in the music video?

Frank if you go to the Book of Seg site and look at the video where he is on the hill, another person on a Segway goes by. A female.

I thought that was an editing trick.

It could be an editing trick, because you do see the person in red walking not too long after they Segway by.

Also, on the Fed-Ex sign pad, there is a quantity of '2' written on the right side..
So was this the big surprise?

Nice allen wrench set they supplied with your Seg pt. When I received the one I ride it just contained four allen wrenches not connected and the keys all in one plastic bag.

Well, in the rules for the early dilevery contest, they said that the winners would recieve a 'special suprise'.....Could that be it?

One other thought, although pt and flash are one 'unit,' they each tend to refer to their Segway(s) as their own instead of 'our' seg. Could this say something?

I did some careful looking and I think that I have fairly good evidence toward our case. Look at the photo on book of seg.com that shows the back of the truck. On the box in the truck that appears to be identical to the one that the fedex guy has out, notice a dent in the left edge of it, just above the handle. Now, if you look at the photo in the house with the cat on top of the box, the same dent is present. This would indicate that both the first and second box came off of the truck.
Is this the smoking gun or am I just getting jumpy?

If you look really close, the box has the "Floating Pedestrian" logo on it, I'm betting that PT got the ultra-secret anti-gravity Segway we've heard rumors about.
I think it'll be bigger than the internet!

A bit more light on the mystery might be found in the Union Leader, sunday the 8th edition. It would appear that our very own flashgoirl was interviewed in a piece on Segways.
"The Union Leader (Manchester NH)
December 8, 2002 Sunday STATE EDITION
A Segway under the tree
By AMY ABBOTTSunday News CorrespondentBEDFORD --Dean Kamen and Segway may be household names in the Granite State, but increasingly that's becoming true for other parts of the country where the inventor's Human Transporters are being used by municipal and corporate organizations such as the U.S. Postal Service and Disney Cruise Lines.
Now Segways are available to the public; but who is buying them and for what sort of use?
"It's great for those trips that are too close to drive but too far to walk," said Elizabeth Goza, 31, of Seattle.
Goza is one of the first people to buy a Segway. She was also one of the first winners of the early delivery contest Segway ran since Amazon started selling them Nov. 18. Goza and Michael Osver from Washington, D.C., Ezra Goldman from Naperville, La., Norman Sanders from Jacksonville, Fla., Donna Boden from Kentucky and Duncan Burt from Virginia were the first six to win the early delivery contest.
To qualify for early delivery, customers had to purchase a Segway on Amazon.com and submit an essay about what they like most about the Segway HT. The contest continues through Dec. 16.
At $4,950 a pop, a $495 non-refundable deposit and the cost of traveling to Bedford for training, the price of a Segway isn't incidental for most.
The only place for the public to buy a Segway Human Transporter is on Amazon.com. The only way to receive the vehicle is to attend training directed by Segway.
Remote training locations throughout the United States will be set up in February to handle the first regular shipments in March. For now, Bedford is the only training location.
There will be 30 winners who will receive their Segways before Dec. 25. Each winner must make his way to Bedford and participate in training for a weekend.
"We are the ambassadors as first owners," Goza said.
The process seemed easy enough for Goza, who says Segways will appeal to more than just collectors and wealthy people.
"It's great for my husband and I. We are a one-car household and if I am gone with the car, he's stuck most of the time," Goza said. "For us, it's a fundamental purchase."
Goza has worked at Microsoft as a product manager for five years. Her office is about 15 miles from home. She usually drives, since she says it's some six miles to the nearest bus stop. A bus would then drop her off about 10 miles away and it's another three miles to the second bus stop.
Her husband works for Fallon Advertising, which handled BMW films. His office is about four miles from home and he uses mass transit or car pools.
"We were looking into getting another car but it would run us about $24,000 or even a Vespa (a traditional motorized scooter) but you have to spend money to register those and pay for gas and pay for maintenance. You don't have all that with a Segway," Goza said.
Goza is still working out the snags of getting around the city. Sharing the sidewalk is one problem.
"Once you're on it, you see it's no more than the width of your shoulders," said Goza. "And everyone is driving so there's no one on the sidewalks. Except when you get into downtown and I like to walk around downtown anyhow...."
Nice job, FG! It is really great that finally, in this online quest for info and understanding about this device, there are some actual early adopters ready and willing to share their experiences (particularly for those of us outside the US, who haven't had a chance to even see one in person).
Thanks!

Apparently both flashgirl and pt ride their Segways to work. It is therefore reasonable to assume that they both have one. But why would they keep that a secret?

Hi Lawrence, I thought they said they had never seen the site before they got their Segs? Because I knew I started the saying the Book of Seg when I was answering questions and I would just quote sections form the Segway Basic Rider Optimization Training for the Segway Human Transporter (HT), Participant Workbook.
But Lawrence you never know why people do what they do. "And so it goes."

If they did get two, I am surprised that Segway LLC would even do that. It is not that pt and flash are not deserving of both those machines(they paid for them), why not give another person out there the opportunity the chance to get their machines early too.
I am sure pt and flash could have survived with one Segway.

I guess we will know the reason when pt updates his site. I think it is great to have a second segway.
My only guess is Segway asked them to keep it low key until the contest was over or its just a way to get people to visit the site.
Who knows? :)

How right you are.
quote:Phillip Torrone bought two Segways -- the other for his wife Beth -- because he wanted to make his two-mile-a-day commute environmentally friendly.
Torrone, director of product development for Fallon Worldwide, located in Seattle, was thinking of buying a hybrid electric car, but decided everything he did -- movies, shopping, work -- was in Segway distance.
Torrone is selling his tricked-out Mazda Miata to cover costs. He figures he's saving $16,000 on car expenses by spending $10,000 on the Segways. The couple is keeping their other car for longer weekend trips.
"I did the math," he said. "The only time I need the car is when I'm with my wife and we go somewhere. I'm about two or three miles away from everything in the world I could want."
Torrone is so delighted with his Segways, he's created an online Segway diary, which includes pictures of the Segway being delivered and unwrapped, and videos of Torrone riding it around a park.
"Every time we go out, people smile," Torrone said. "It's a license to talk to everyone."

As many said in this thread, there were many clues in the picture section of that site.
I just wonder why Segway would limit the chances of someone else of getting one early by doing so.
no one's chances were limited by any winner buying two units, fyi.

This is my take; ignore it if you wish:
Although PT may have always wanted two, I doubt that they bought two before winning the contest. There was lots of speculation in another thread about why we have to wait until March. No doubt in my mind: It is not the production limitation, but their training requirement and lack of facilitation thereof.
Now, once a winner and guest have been trained, the guest is qualified to be a Segway HT owner. We untrained folk are not. Sorry weskifm but they have to draw the line somewhere. You'll probably get yours before all other non-contest winners.
So, did anyone else notice that the wired article interviewed two winners, and they both "bought" two Segways? I dare say many who win the contest end up with two. Whether that is because the "Exclusive gifts to commemorate your stay and share your experiences with others" means they give you a second one to share (doubt it), or more probably, they offered them a very good deal.
It is possible that just the excitement of being in the showroom sold these winners on buying at full list. However, a better deal was probably given to them. Whether a token $1 purchase or buy a second one at cost ($2500?), these folks couldn't refuse the opportunity. Of course, if they were given a less than list price, they also agreed not to sell either by a certain date, and possibly a non-disclosure as well.
My twenty cents. We'll all be happy when we get ours, and I'm certain we'll have an opportunity before May.
Cheers!
