"For its part, the company will lend some Segways to the school and sell them at a steep discount to I-I-T students and faculty.

Segways currently cost nearly five thousand dollars, but they will be sold to students and faculty for about 36 hundred dollars."

Seems like Chicago is the current center of the Segway universe....

edit- thanks to Groovy in Segway Siberia for the find.

that sounds like a good price for a Seg.. unless they go out of business.. which would be bad.. but good for the bashers.. who I'm not one of.. as far as I know..

Brrrrr! It's cold in Siberia..

One of our boys will be a sophomore at the Univ of Wisconsin - Madison living off campus in an apartment. A Seg with enhanced traction tires would be great for him except he doesn't want to be the only student with a Seg and be perceived to be a rich spoiled kid. For us, I'd rather him have a $5,000 Seg than a $25,000 car. I don't know what the campus's policy is either.

I wish Segway would start a leasing program so I could afford a Segway for college.

Well Fred, someone has to be the first on campus with a Segway.....your son can be a real "trailblazer".I hope he does it and breaks new ground and starts a new fad at school!

It's been a fun two days at the IIT campus where GlideMaster, X-Man, Ladytime, and I demo-ed lots of students and faculty. We were were well received and got big grins from the President and many of his faculty. I think that this will be the harbinger of all good things "On Campus" for Segway.
IIT will also be in attendance at Segway FesT! 2003.
We spent two sun filled days gliding on campus and doing media interviews. Last evening we were seen on WGN TV, ABC TV, and several other places, including a nice article in the Sun Times, and on radio. Tomorrow evening there will be a nice segment on our Public TV station WTTW with yours truly!
I will try to post some photos later this evening![^]:D:);)[:P]

Regarding the discount--Is it for an the 'i' model or the 'p'? Any of you Chicago ambassadors know? If for the 'i', that's a pretty generous savings. Hopefully, this program spreads out to other schools and institutions.

Anybody thinking of goin' back to school?;)

Thanks for the clarification, Glidemaster.

But it makes me wonder about the fate of the 'p'. It will reportedly be available during the new school year. It would be a good thing to see some similar incentives applied to the smaller, cheaper model, imo. Anything to get them out in the public in larger numbers, as quickly as possible, would seem a good strategy.

Perhaps the smaller model would even better lend itself to campus environments?

I would imagine Segway LLC has other ideas for the 'P' series. Although you bring up some good points about why they should have went with the 'P' in the first place.

I keep in mind that this is a study and a great opportunity for LLC, as well as some of the students at the university to purchase and test Segways.

As for the discounted Segways and why I think they went with the 'I' series, this could have been something to juice up the arrangement so that the college felt like they were getting something in return. Which they are! [:O](sorry, could not find a 'jealous' expression. but you get my point :P)

Segway is currently doing a study on HT's on campus. They sent me a survey about where i went to school, how the HT was perceived, and how I think they'd be useful (blah, blah, blah.) Sounds like they are putting the info to good use!

I would almost bet they are p-series. If the price for the i is 3600 why would anyone by a p at 3750?

be keen, keep clean, glide green.

Has been, is, and always will be! :D

Just kiddin' ... we do have an exceptionally Segway-friendly city, though!
