View Full Version : Waiting for my Segway!

I finally ordered my Segway 2 weeks ago. After reading the posts herefor a couple of months - one in particuler I rememberd reading was not to buy your Segway from Amazon because they only check thier internet orders once a week. If you go through Segway LLC. you would get it faster. Well, even though Amazon says "usually ships in 24 hours" I went through Segway. When I called to order I was told I had to fax them back a signed order form which would place my order. (I didn't even think to ask how long- because if Amazon is shipping them in 24 hours the factory could only do better) A couple of hours after my fax was sent I received an E-Mail stating that my order was placed (8-8) and would be shipped on 8-16, ariving in 3-5 business days. The week wait threw me back, especially knowing Amazon is saying they ship in 24 hours. I decided no big deal- at least it had been ordered.. I had waited this long, I could wait another week. Well the 16th has come and gone and I didn't receive an E-Mail saying it shipped or a tracking number.
So after all my longwindedness here is my question. Does anyone know if the plant (Segway Manufacturing) shut down or was affected by the northeast power outages? Maybe this is why it didn't ship on the 16. Also does Segway make more money off of HT's ordered through them and not Amazon? In my mind they don't have to pay Amazon's commision and there both the same price so they have to make more. But my logic has been flawed in the past.

This is only speculation... but it has always seemed to me that the "ships in 24 hours" designation means it is a product they have in stock in their warehouse, "ships in 2-3 days" means it is in stock from an outside source (don't know if they drop ship or receive and then ship it from amazon) and "2-3 weeks" means something that they list but don't keep in stock, or something that has the stock depleted. We have a book listed for sale on amazon, they keep a few copies in stock, and the timing seems to reflect that for our book at least.
I'm guessing that since the Segway thing is a special deal between LLC and Amazon, the regular shipping settings don't apply, and someone just chose to pick the "24 hours" setting for the software once manufacturing at LLC got on a roll... Maybe from LLC's point of view, they ship in 24 hours once they have the order processed, which might have nothing to do with whatever the amazon order "state" lists.
In any case, not to worry Chapinville, you should have it soon, and those last few days waiting for it (sitting on the stoop all day, jumping everytime you hear a truck turn down your street...) well, that's part of the Segway experience! Enjoy it, and really, really enjoy your Segway once you get it! Be sure to follow the charging rules, and TAKE IT EASY on your early glides (don't get overconfident, build up experience on it slowly)
Have fun!

The power outage has slowed down shipping into and out of the New York area distribution points. I made a shipment to NYC from south Florida on the morning of the 14th via FedEx overnite. Well later that afternoon the lights went out back east, and needless to say the shipment never made it there yesterday afternoon as promised . FedEx will not refund ( get it there on-time or it's free) under those circumstances, and the package has yet to be delivered. I'm OK with this...just hoping the receiver is just as understanding.

I'm not surprised by the time between order and shipping. The problem I've always had ordering factory direct with any product is that factories are better suited to shipping in bulk. When your order for 1 goes in you are behind other orders for 10, 50 or 100 so your item waits until everything ahead of it is loaded. It may also have gotten pushed into the next manufacturing cycle depending on how the order volume is. I think safe practice is to keep manufacturing inventory as low as realistically possible so as not to get caught with a lot of stock should the market suddenly dry up as happened with network companies a few years ago. Anyway, while there was no interruption in our power in NH we did experience some network problems, the usual shipping lines did get jostled a little and to top things off it seems there are lots of people on vacation meaning there are fewer people around to straighten things up. Come Monday, things will be normal.

Thanks all for the insight... plus I made a mistake... it was supposed to ship yesterday, the 15th, not the 16th.

NH was not affected by the power outage... well directly that is.

I don't really think that Amazon.com has the capability to ship them in 24 hrs. They might process the order within 24 hrs, but I'd bet you got the better deal through LLC.
So cheer up, you've waited this long, it'll be on your doorstep really soon. Everbody here (who are owners) sure do remember how hard those last couple days are, though!

Chapinville - if you think the wait now is hard, wait until it arrives and you have to stare at it all day while it gets that important first charge!
Seriously, I know the feeling - but it is worth the wait!
Be sure to let us know when you get it!
Happy gliding

Well, I received my Segway on Tuesday.. It shipped on time after all. I just didn't get any notification from Segway. No bad, from N.H. to Louisiana .. left on Friday, got it on Tuesday.. it moved all weekend. The bummer is training is not available for another week.... well after reading this forum and all the Segway sites on the internet for the past year..reading the "Project Ginger" book, viewing the Video, reading the manuals, basically absorbing all that is Segway. How could I wait. I started on the black key and I am taking it slow. I have read about all the problems with starting off too bravely. Not sure what is more important... not hurting me or not hurting the Segway! Holly cow, it is better (and easier) than I ever imagined. It's hard to go to work with something like this waiting at home. All I want to do is ride, ride, ride. Can't wait until someone else in this area gets one.[/:)]

The trainer will show you (or at least should show you) some things you won't experience in normal riding, like stick shake and what to do if there is a shutdown, how to give "demos" (or say no if that is your choice), what are the limits of the Segway, etc.
Keep taking riding slow, but even if you feel like a "pro" by the time the trainer comes, he will impart valuable information that will help you on your way to truly becoming a pro. Personally, given the temptation factor, I can't see much harm in some gentle riding IF you feel that the manual and video have given you enough confidence to start, BUT I would definitely not venture into unexpected territory until you get your training. Hopefully the thrill of some short, gentle glides will hold you until your training is complete, young Skywalker.
