Did all you NY'ers have your Segways fully charged before the power went out ?? Lets hear the stories of your commutes back home after work during the blackout.

A Segway would do you no good today in New York. It is shoulder to shoulder in the streets and on the sidewalks.

Well, looking at the photos of the Stonyefield Smoothies events, you could still be on a Segway, shoulder to shoulder. In fact, it might be good to be on one there... it would be good proof of the safety of the Segway in crowded conditions <G>.

I stayed at work until almost 10pm here in NJ helping with watching over the network and servers as we generated our own power for the entire facilities here. So, we were all lit up and I did not know the rest of NJ had power restored. When I was getting ready to Segway home in the dark, I was preparing myself for total darkness out there in the world. I was a little disappointed to find that the street lights were back on as I got to the edge of our property.

Segwaying in the dark with Segway's Solo Logic lighting system is great fun. There is a calmness to the world at night that I enjoy. I stay on familiar paths (for the most part) and keep my eyes open. I enjoy the hightened alertness that is required - it helps me concentrate on the Segway technique and takes my mind off of other crap that seems to distract me most of the other time.

Almost like a meditation - the drone of the electric motors and the gears is a comforting sound as I get tuned into the speed fluctuations of the Segway. I really do feel that the Segway is an extension of my body as I am fully integrated with it.

On straight roads, I fold my hands behind my back and do minor direction corrections by shifting my weight. I am sure this looks really wierd to see as a guy in a standing position is just zooming along at 12 mph totally effortlessly. Sometimes I just fold both hands together and hang them over the front of the handbars in a very relaxed position. Sometimes, I fold my hands behind my back like Morpheus does in The Matrix.

I really like riding my Segway HT!!!

Yeah, wall-to-wall people is a situation I've been familiar with since Key West...Duval Street! I think it wasn't in the spirit of yesterday though - so far it's seeming as though New Yorkers handled this pretty well. As the NPR reporter said, it's a sort of snow day - in 90 degree heat!

Best of luck to our Northeastern Grid brethren!

Let's just take the safety labels off of everything and let America's problem sort itself out.

I'm in Toronto. We were completely blacked out from approx. 4:30pm to approx. 5am., save for emergency lighting systems.

I rode home about 7.7 miles yesterday at dinner time. Because I live by the harbour, most of my commutes involve a return trip that's downhill. I am a "sidewalk surfer", so most of my commute home yesterday was "gravity powered"... I was just mixed in with the pedestrian flow, riding my brakes (this on an electric scooter, so I have to imagine this is a little like riding a segway on busy sidewalks...)

Generally, I would coast up behind some unsuspecting walker and "hang" behind them. I was against most of the pedestrian flow, as most folks were heading *out* of the downtown core. There were a *lot* more folks walking yesterday than normal of course.

There were also a lot of folks just hanging out on porches and patios as I went by. I just wanted to report that there were a LOT of comments overheard as I went by. ALL positive. Stuff like I WANT one of those, and Boy, you are riding in style, and I'll buy it, how much?
The kids on one school bus all sang out in chorus "That's a COOL scooter!" ... These sorts of comments are normal, just not so many all one one day!

I'm telling you, younger folk seem uniformly very positive about this mode of transport. It's the oldies making our laws that're being swayed by political process, stale thinking and myopic vision.

Cheers

Stan, that is so cool!! You described what I do each evening going home. However, my glide is just prior to the sunset at this time of year.[^]

Follow your bliss,
Ron

"handless" gliding over
the past couple of days.
(i probably don't go
faster than about 8 mph,

that "oneness" sensation

It is now 3PM Friday.
Earlier today, we took the Segway out gliding in midtown Manhattan. Very little traffic. Checked out to see what stores were open (mostly closed), Glided up to Grand Central Station to see if I can get on a Metro North train to Westchester, "Sorry, nothing is working as of yet"

So, it is catching a ride out of town, in a friend's auto, leaving the Segway in NY......maybe we will get our power back on later today!!!!!!!!

Nope, I would disagree. In fact, the Segway HT came in handy BIG TIME yesterday, and thousands of New Yorkers would agree. Check it out:

BTW, power is back on now!!!

I'll have those photos up as soon as I get back to my apartment.

I finally got to use my segway charger and after returning from lower Manhattan with no battery left, I was able to walk up 19 flights of stairs get 2 fresh batteries and return. I sat on the sidewalk and put the new batteries on, that reminds me the old batteries are still in the lobby. Franks last words to me 30 mins. before the black out was, "I bet you can't wait for the new Segways batteries, which will let you travel twice the distance."

Itsi, you had to walk up 19 flights? . There's some non-users that say you dont get any exercise when you use a Segway !! Well, we're all glad you folks up in NY are doing better today....you sure have to put up with a lot at times.
