View Full Version : Buy a Segway, save big $$$?
quote:having one car in 2003 will save the household a total of roughly $10,000 (payments and insurance). when you add gas and maintenance, that's another $5,000 per year. add parking (right now i pay $5 per day, that's around $1,200 per year too. so, about $16,000.

pt, I have seen similar calculations made on the Segway LLC site. Impressive. I dont suppose u are saying this to rationalize your purchase, but the sceptics would ask u why u didnt invest in a bike, e-bike, e-scooter instead. Would that not have been a lot cheaper?

a skeptic is going to poo poo on anything (that's what they do) so i'm not ever going to go down the path of justifications, but i did create a place that has my particular situation explained, they can decide for themselves, it might not be best for them or have the same exact cost saving, but for us it is.
as far as a bike / e-scooter goes, they're not options here's why:
-i need to carry a pretty big load sometimes for work (laptops / projectors / etc..) i can't do it on a bike (i've tried).
-riding a bike would mean getting sweaty on the way to the office, i have client meetings.
-can't take a bike on sidewalks or scooter my route requires that.
-i have an e-scooter, the range and speed aren't good enough, can't carry loads the hills in seattle (queen anne) are way to hard for those too, the segway is fine on those.
cheers,

How do you indend to carry the load on a Segway?

acessory bag (march) right now i have a couple back packs and i also put one of them on the handbars, works out fine. when i used a bike the side to side pedal motion throws the items off, on a e-scooter i need to push frequently--stuff falls off and the range didn't work out.
so far it's been much easier, better, faster with a segway ht.

I am glad to hear that even a $5000 Segway is the vehicle of choice for some people. I wonder how many like u are there out there.

It looks to me as if anybody who can reduce their stable of cars by one would come out way ahead with a Segway. All that should take is the acceptance of standing up and riding to work instead of getting into a car.
With Seattle's weather though I would think that would present a problem a fair amount of the time.
If the second or third car is only used for short errands it should be no problem.

well, it was either a segway or another car (hybrid) after careful analysis we can go for the segway for our travel needs.
i'm sure there are at least 1-2 million people in the usa that would currently consider the segway ht, the challenge is to reach them and get them in a ht to try it.
here's something to consider, 10,000 segway ht's = $50,000,000 so they don't need sales in the millions, but i'm sure that would be great too.

Sound promising pt. Tell us about the weather conditions where u live. How many days of rain and snow? How cold does it get in winter? How warm in the summer? Do pedistrians react positively to u riding on the sidewalk so far?

i live in seattle, wa.
>>How many days of rain and snow?
i've been here for about 2 years and there hasn't been a day of snow that i can recall, and while there is a light mist here, it doesn't rain hard really, it's cloudy 1/4 of the year total i'd guess. from what i'm told these have been 2 great years of weather here. it's not like i was told before i moved here (all cloudy-all the time).
it's really the perfect place for segway ht, there are no extremes here and the towns are all well designed for bikes, pedestrians and segways.
while i was in manchester at segway training we went in the snow, water and ice, worked great.
>How cold does it get in winter?
48 degrees, it never gets that cold.
>>How warm in the summer?
80 degress-ish, it never gets that hot.
>>Do pedistrians react positively to u riding on the sidewalk so far?
the people here are amazing, they've all been very pleased and impressed with the unit. 4-5 people have stopped their cars, parked, got out and afterwards went out and pre-ordered one.
seattle is a great place for these, the people are nice, educated, the crime rate is very low--and the weather is great all year.
i'm very happy about all this.

It is great to hear this kind of news. If this is a consistant reaction with some of the early buyers of the Segway can get from people just driving around Segway LLC will have loads of orders to fill.
Great job PT and Flashg.

Totally bogus.
I've taken a bike with a full load of backcountry camping gear, a week's work of food and 4 gallons of water off onto rugged desert jeep trails without loosing anything to 'side to side pedal motion'. Any load that could be carried in a Segways bags could be handled in similar bags securely mounted on a bike.
I don't understand why people have to make up reasons for not wanting to commute by bike. The most valid reason for many people is simply that it's not something they enjoy doing. That's a fine reason. I know that bikes aren't for everyone, especially riding in urban traffic. It's ok to say that biking is just not your cup of tea. But when you start listing off the reasons why it can't be done, you insult the intellegence of successful bike commuters who work around those obstacles every day. Segway riders are going to face many similar obstacles, but if your really enjoy it you'll work around them too. Don't let people tell you it can't be done. If its fun and gets you out of a car, do it.

any broad statment would be bogus, this is just me though, in my situation.
i've tried to ride a bike with my specific cargo, as i said the side to side motion throws the items off me and the bike, the hills in seattle and my route on the roads i need to take are pretty rigorous. the segway so far seems to tackle this better for me. i also can't show up to the office all sweaty (client meetings, etc..).
i'm sure other skilled bike riders could handle all this, i cannot. i'm sure a better bike with saddle bags could do this too, but that's not something i could really do with my travel needs, everyone's results may vary, these are just mine. i love everyone :-]

I can understand your point of view, but I think PT has made a good point of having an uncomfortable time carrying such a load. I don't know so much if he was making excuses to downplay a bikes usefulness.
Are you looking forward to a Segway ride, because from what it sounds, it must be some ride!

When I was 20, I couldn't understand why everyone didn't climb mountains with their teeth and fashion yurts from mud. Anyway, I've ordered a Segway...

If Segway can just maintain this growth, where every week each Segway results in the sale of 4-5 more Segways, it won't be long before everybody on Earth owns one!
Seriously, though, it sounds like pt and flashgoirl are doing a great job of overcoming the "sight unseen" factor in Seattle. If this is any indication, Segway sales could explode over the next few months, as more and more people get the chance to see a Segway in action and try it for themselves.

Yes, I find the Segway very attractive and yet quite unaffordable.
I am fortunate. I do not need a lot. I do, however, need a Segway Human Transport and without the generosity of others there is no way I will ever be able to get one ( maybe 5-10 years from now when they are as inexpensive like DVD players)

I can't believe that someone who is totally unknown would post a request for others to send him or her money via credit card. My suggestion would be for that person to get a second job, seek public assistance on hang out on the expressway off ramp
