View Full Version : Segway cargo mounts (newbie question)
Again, Pardon me for asking a newbie question.
I was perusing some pictures on this site and other segway sites, when I notices a few segways which had mounted on them on one side only, a place to carry cargo, ie. bags, briefcases, one had an actual leather briefcase sitting above it's right wheel.
It this an e series? It didn't have the traditional Segway cargo bags with the black piping frame. I have included the web address of a picture I saw from segwayboston, and it appears to be a P series with a one sided mount, or is the satchel just resting on the wheel mount leaning against the wall? If this is indeed a feature, is it available for an i series?
I am set to purchase one, and I since I can't have the full cargo capacity of an e series, I would like the one sided cargo attachment feature, in addition to a handlebar bag.
Is this an actual feature or is this an owner customization?
The address is:

Give a wait. It may be available for the I soon.

Looks like Dean's P, so that's a briefcase carrier made by him.

The Segway you see in the link with the leather briefcase is Dean's own P model. The other is an I model.
If you are looking for a carrier, go to the BUY and SELL forum and check out waynes Seg On Carrier.

I spoke with Segway of Texas (Mark)a few weeks ago and was surprised to find out that they have the lower cargo kit available for the i-series! I think it was $485. I considered getting it. But I didn't want the reduced performance from not being able to lean much side-to-side. I like the look of the side bags, but it does make the Seg kinda too bulky for my taste. If you don't have a Seg yet and want the side bags, you might as well just buy the e and get the e-kickstand.

I'm surprised that they're saying you can use the lower bags on the "i" - that's a major shift in the way Segway has done business in the past on this issue. (Not that they can't change their mind...) Personally, I'd just as soon use one of Wayne's aftermarket carriers, since you can choose to order just one. The lower bag carriers on the "e" has a frame that holds bags on both sides.
As of April there were no plans to do a briefcase carrier like Dean's at Segway - but that could have changed, too, for all i know.
Personally, I wouldn't want the mileage range hit that you get with the addition of the weight from the lower bag kit (or from the 'e'). But that's just my opinion.

After having the e stand explained to me at the TTR event a few weeks ago, I've realized that there is no way I would ever want an e! That thing has a mind of its own. I do like the idea of side bags for carrying groceries though. But for $485, I think I'd just get Wayne's.

I trained on the 'e', and I don't consider it especially difficult. I purchased Wayne's side briefcase carrier (with velcro strapdowns), and I like it.
Here's his site: http://www.kcaps.com/segway.html

Was learning to ride the e much different than an i? I was told that when in e stand, if the unit is touched, it will shoot out three feet in either direction to regain balance. In anything but a warehouse, that just seems like a bad thing.
But since I've never ridden one, and you have, you can tell me what's what.

Sunday. That's a bit of an exageration. But yes an E is much different than an I.

Well, I'm sure Sid and others have far more experience than I. My little experience is that the e's bags do affect your leaning (I leaned against them lazily for support like leaning against a wall.) As for mounting and dismounting, the style I learned from the e is very similar to what I since started using with the i. I barely hold onto the handlebars, mostly with the handlebars resting on my palm.

I think maybe I was hearing someone being talked out of getting an e. It made it seem like the things were potentially dangerous in an open environment. Now I'm back to thinking they're cool. Oh, I know I'll catch heat for asking this, but can the e stand be turned off when you don't want it running?

You can turn the 'e' off, or change it from balance mode to power assist mode (after you are off the contacts of course).

Just to clarify. You can take a machine out of e-stand by putting into follow mode. But you must first get off, machine will go into e-stand, then put it into follow mode.

E vs I
I work for a Manufacturing company that has both I's and E's - After 100+ hours on the units each, and being a 3T instructor, here is my personal thoughts.
I - Less machine like, more like gliding on a work of art!
E - More machine like, feels more like you are riding a machine then a work of art, got to learn to 'lean' in a different way.
Now, getting on and off, I find it is easier to train people to pull the e (finger tips) back toward you so the platform is semi level, place one foot on the unit (soon as this is done the plat form balances out completly for "Ride Mode" then get on (w/o moving the unit) and take off! Of course, with my experience I can just hop on it w/o thinking into it that much, but one problem you can have if you don't pull it to you is when you go to balance it, it *could* come back and bite you in the shins.
We put weight in our cargo bags to help the unit counter balance the control shaft between the cargo bags to keep it more level. It will balance with out them, but adding more weight keeps it more level.
Getting off, just step off like you normally would, don't move the unit and let it do it's thing.
E - Model does NOT balance on any sort of noticable 'slope', in this case I park it side ways on any slope.
Other then all that, (no really) that is all there is to it.
I perfer the I, it's easy to just park it agaisnt something and walk away (leaving it in balance mode) of course in MY enviorment, this is practical, in yours it might not be :) I would like to see a 'security key' for this sort of thing. That was a great idea posted by someone else.
I am sure I will love the P even more when I get a chance to ride it...
