View Full Version : Shipping the HT (to SegFest)

Just did a search here, as well as the other great Segway resource websites about shipping the HT.

I think I have the container covered, and some general airline details, but I was wondering if people could chime in here with some of the pricing details they have found through the various freight carriers, airlines etc...

Thanks
-Ed

The big question I recently thought of--how do we ship our HTs *back* from SegFest? Some shipping carrier will be happy to have a whole bunch of Segways to ship out the Monday after :)

I was considering FedEx-ing the CS and batteries, but what are the price points for airlines?

Let's just take the safety labels off of everything and let America's problem sort itself out.

Guys I've heard of people geting on to planes with their Segways and just leaving them upfront. Why not just take it with you?

The hotel will, for a fee, store your packed Segway until the shipper (which you arrange for) can pick it up. I think this is covered in the main convention thread above, or possibly at the SegFest website.

You're kidding, right? I've had to check my laptop backpack several times on full flights. Where were the Segways stowed?

In the cargo (the same place they'd put baby strollers, etc). But this has only happened with people who were disabled and I believe they'd made arrangements in advance.

Pam - In that case it makes perfect sense. No different than a wheelchair et al.
I doubt that I'd have much luck gliding through security, and still be lucky enough to get the airline to stow it.

On this topic, I am seeing rates of ~$120 (one way!!) to ship my Seg from NC. This was just a quick search with FedEx Ground, Airborne etc..

Any other suggestions?

My goal would be ~125 round trip, and only loose 1 day on each end of the trip for shipping.

Since my airline ticket is only $187, Could I just buy an extra seat and use that? I have seen people do this before with Tubas and such... Sure the airlines would allow it if it could be secured, but what about security?

Pack the Segway in two boxes and bring it on the plane...

Airlines have varying rules on cabin-seat baggage. Continental's, for example is: quote:Continental Airlines will allow a customer to purchase a ticket for an item, approved by a Continental agent, which is too fragile or bulky to be handled as checked baggage.
The following restrictions apply:

* Must not exceed 165 lbs (75 kg).
* Must be packaged or covered in a manner to avoid injury to other customers.
* Must be secured in a seat adjacent to the owner.
* Must be properly secured by a seat belt to avoid shifting during flight.
* Must not restrict access to, or use of, any regular or emergency exit or aisle of the cabin.
* Must not obscure any customer's view of "seat belt," "no smoking" or "exit" signage.
* Must not contain dangerous goods.
* Must be reserved in advance and applicable charges paid.

Please check with a Continental agent for pricing information.
While Delta's similar policy is:
quote: Cabin-Seat Baggage
You may purchase a full fare ticket for an item that you feel is too fragile to be handled as checked baggage. You may stow the baggage in any passenger seat with a physical bulkhead or divider in front of the compartment.

The following restrictions apply. The item:

* must not exceed 165 pounds
* must be packaged or covered in a manner to avoid injury to other customers
* must be properly secured by a seat belt to avoid shifting during flight
* must not restrict access to, or use of, any required emergency or regular exits or aisle of the cabin
* must not obscure any passenger's view of seat belt, no smoking or exit signs
* must not contain dangerous goods
* must be secured in a seat in the same cabin as the owner and preferably next to the owner

For pricing information, please check with a Delta agent at 800-221-1212. My guess that the charges for the extra seat would be a full coach fare, but you'd have to check.

Wow! What a pain in the rear. I've talked to flight attendants and it could just be up to the discretion of the crew if they want to put it in the wheelchair stowage area. Otherwise, just take it apart - put the platform and control stick in one bag and check it and carry on the wheels and fenders with you in another bag.

or, get a bike box, and just put everything in there - you can make it all fit I believe - take the wheels and fenders off - put them where you'd put the wheels of a bike. take the platform off, put it between the wheels and fenders - where the frame of a bike would be. take the control stick, and put it where the bike seat post or even the front handlebars would be in a bike box. this would be really interesting to see a picture of - can someone do this?

here's how to assemble the box. and when you get to the airport, just put the segway together and fold the box and away you go - don't take a cab, just glide to the hotel!

Ben, your premise is good, with one minor flaw. I have a bike box to ship my bike. Unfortunately the shaft coming from the base of the Segway will not fit in the box in any configuration. What size bike box do you have ? Most common carriers will not take a box of an oversize dimension. Most bike boxes are fairly "thin" in the width dimension. The Segway base is just too thick !!!

LarryKay, do you mean the control-shaft base? The "neck" that sticks out from the base? It's held down with three bolts and has two cables connecting to it.

It might be possible to ship in a bicycle box by removing the base, but I would worry very much about the cables dangling out from the base being damaged during transit. That would definitely void your warranty!

A bicycle in 1897 cost $25 ($2,200 today adjusted for inflation).
A Ford Model-T cost $850 in 1908 ($75,000 today adjusted for inflation).
(Can anyone point me to historical prices of horses?)

there are boxes wide enough for bikes that have the pedals still attached, right? it seems the platform and that neck wouldn't be wider than that, is it?

One thing that could really be improved is the ability to collapse the segway into something that can more easily be brought on a plane. it's totally possible.... someone take up the challenge.... hehe...

Although I think the bike box is moving in the right direction....

1) I think it would still be too heavy. Most airlines start charging extra at over 50lbs
2) I want a little more potection for my Seg than 1/8" of cardboard - I guess I could look into the hard-shell bike cases - who knows.

I used the actionpack rubbermaid container and seg was safe travelling by plane .. didn't have to pay extra either .. see :

Does anyone else find the irony in how difficult it is to ship a segway? It being a personal transportation device and all, you would've thought the women on the design team would have spoken up and said something. . .oh wait. There weren't any women! That must be it.

with regard to some of the plans to put the chassis and control shaft base in a bike box... it's not reccommended that you separate these two parts as in order to maintain water ingress integrity the screws should be replaced by NEW screws every time major components (like the CSB and the platform) are separated.

pam

Locktite will help with that water ingress integrity, too.
(or however it is spelled <G>)

Pam

yup, if you've got the right kind putting that on the screws should help. there's a different compound for the threads than for the back of the socket head.

pam

By - what's the difference? I'm thinking that it might be good to know for those who would order new screws, but want to be protected until they come..
I know the screw thread loktite for my fenders is blue. I've heard some of the loktite is brown - don't know the difference.

But then the fenders would have been pink, the foot pad carpeted and there would be a glove box for make up etc. :-) just kidding .. I'm in trouble now !
