Dear SoCal Seggers,

The next (unofficial/informal)*Segway L.A. Gathering will be at Shoreline Park (and surrounding areas) in Long Beach, California, at 10am, Saturday, August 16th. *(Moved back a week from August 9).

We'll start "checking in" people around 9:30 AM. Please look for us at the USCG light house on the hill. You can't miss it. (See the two pictures below.)

We will start off the day with the ~5 mile Glide-Along around the Marina, Shoreline Park, and Rainbow Lagoon Park.

There is a large variety of terrain and riding conditions during this event to keep things interesting. Beginners can learn from more experienced gliders on how to glide smoothly, how to tackle 20 degree slopes, curb drops and climbs, and so on.

There will be a number of beautiful photo-op stops. There are several potential pit-stop points along the way, too.

At 10am, we'll assemble everybody for a quick overview and orientation, and then start gliding at 10:15.

The area is designed to mix pedestrians and bicyclists, and is pretty Seg-friendly. LBPD allows Segways to be used in the area. I also have received an approval from the City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine's Office of Special Events Planning.

Long Beach is making major improvements to the area to make it a major tourist destination. After the organized Glide-Along, you can break for lunch at Shoreline Village, or spend the rest of the day at the Long Beach Aquarium.

I will be giving away some extra-long Segway charging cables as prizes.

I will be bringing key-making/customizing equipment again and will make keys at cost. This will be a great opportunity for us to do some show-and-tell!

There's free parking at Shoreline Park, but not a lot of spaces.
There is also a dirt lot located just a block away just on the other side of the bridge (to the west) of the Queensway Bridge. Although there are some "no parking" signs, you can park in the dirt lot where it says "Overflow Parking for Fishermen"

There is plenty of "cheap" parking near Shoreline Village at $2 for 2 hours (you can legally "feed the meter" for more time). There is plenty of paid parking at Shoreline Village and at the Long Beach Aquarium ($8 and $7, respectively).

UPDATE: Changed from August 9 to August 16 because of logistical reasons coordinating with the City of Long Beach Park and Rec and Marina Office of Special Events. I apologize for the date change after the initial posting!

UPDATE: Confirmed parking situation info with City of Long Beach.

I updated the event date from August 9 to August 16 because of logistical reasons, in coordination with the City of Long Beach Parks and Rec and Marina Office of Special Events. The folks that posted above had replied to the original Aug 9 date, but I hope they can make the new August 16 date!

Please let me know here or privately if you plan to attend in case I need to send any more updates.

Thanks!
Joseph

A bicycle in 1897 cost $25 ($2,200 today adjusted for inflation).
A Ford Model-T cost $850 in 1908 ($75,000 today adjusted for inflation).
(Can anyone point me to historical prices of horses?)

UPDATE: There is plenty of parking at a dirty lot very close to the park. I have confirmed with the City of Long Beach that it is okay to park there (even though there are some no-longer-enforced No Parking signs).

From the responses I've gotten so far, it seems like we'll have more Segways arriving as couples than as singles... (8 machines at four "pairs", versus about 6 "singles")

Greetings, I will be there with my “E” model. There have been some postings that the “E” model gets less gliding time because of the E Stand. That’s not really true. IN FACT, I will be happy to make a bet with anyone in attendance that I can glide longer before the top bar starts blinking then any “I” model in attendance.
“E” Model, 95 lbs plus cargo
“I” Model, 83 Lbs
I will have my Saddle Bags on with some weight inside
Any takers
Jackson
